Legend and Deconstruction. The Motif of a Unicorn in the Modern Literature and Culture

Jednorożec jako motyw od wieków przewijający się przez historię europejskiej kultury wciąż jest w niej obecny i stale ulega przekształceniom. Symboliczne „uśmiercenie” legendarnego stworzenia w wyniku XVII-wiecznych odkryć naukowych było tylko pozorne – choć motyw jednorożca zniknął na pewien czas z kart literatury i malarskich płócien, szybko powrócił do kultury wzbogacony o nowe elementy: postmodernistyczną grę z tradycją, feministyczną rewizję toposu damy z jednorożcem, popkulturowe przekształcenia i cyberkulturowe parodie. Poprzez analizę wybranych dzieł oraz poszukiwanie źródeł konkretnych wyobrażeń autorka przedstawia kształt motywu w literaturze i sztuce XX wieku.

The unicorn, as a theme recurring throughout the history of the European culture, is constantly present there and it still undergoes alternations. Symbolic “putting to death” of the legendary creature as a result of the 17th century scientific discoveries was only apparent – although the unicorn motif had disappeared from the literature and paintings for some time, it quickly returned to the culture enriched by new elements: postmodern playing with the tradition, a feminist revision of the motif of a lady with a unicorn, pop culture transformations and cyberculture parodies. The author presents the characteristics of the unicorn motif in the 20th literature and art by means of the selected works analysis and the search for sources of particular images.
