The text constitutes a survey of the motif of the Great War in the work of Graham Swift. Although none of his nine novels is devoted to this subject, yet the war is a formative event for a number of characters. The author uses the concept of cultural trauma (Smelser) in order to demonstrate that in Swift's last novel "Wish You Were Here" (2011) the experience of WWI constitutes a cultural trauma which unites local communities unlike other violent events such as the mad-cow disease or the war in Iraq.
