The patriarchal gender order in Tornedalen. The feminist and gender analysis of Ulla Eneslätt’s novel "Barn är Guds gåva"

Powieść "Barn är Guds gåva" autorstwa Ulli Eneslätt przedstawia historię kobiet uciskanych przez patriarchalny porządek płci panujący w Tornedalen, regionie kulturowym w Norrbotten. Celem niniejszej pracy jest dokonanie feministyczno-genderowej analizy tekstu w odniesieniu do sytuacji kobiet w społeczeństwie patriarchalnym, różnic międzypłciowych oraz norm płciowych, które je powodują. Praca składa się z wstępu, sześciu rozdziałów, z czego dwa są teoretyczne, a cztery analitycze, oraz zakończenia. W części teoretycznej przedstawiona jest historia Tornedalen, narracja oraz problematyka powieści. Jest tu również zaprezentowana metodologia badań, m.in teoria gender oraz teoria performatywności płci. W analitycznej części pracy badana jest sytuacja kobiet w społeczeństwie, religii oraz rodzinie. Problematyka norm płciowych jest również przedstawiona z męskiego punktu widzenia. Niniejsza praca wykazała, że źródłem różnic międzypłciowych są normy płciowe narzucone przez kulturę, a ugruntowane poprzez nieustane powtarzanie aktów performatywnych.

The novel "Barn är Guds gåva" written by Ulla Eneslätt presents women characters oppressed by the patriarchal society in Tornedalen, the cultural region in Norrbotten. The aim of this study is to make a feminist and gender analysis of the novel considering the situation of women in the patriarchal society, sex differences and the gender norms that cause them. The thesis comprises of introduction, six chapters, of which two are theoretical and the other four contains the analysis, and the conclusion. The theoretical part of the thesis illustrates Tornedalen’s history, narration in the novel, its plot and topic. It also presents the methodology that the analysis is based on, f. ex. the theories of gender and performativity. The analytical part of the thesis contains the study about the situation of women in society, religion and family. The issue of gender norms is also analyzed from male perspective. All things considered, the analysis and the collected materials have managed to show that differences between sexes are the result of gender norms imposed by the culture, which are maintained by repeating of performative acts.

Ulla Eneslätts roman "Barn är Guds gåva" presenterar några kvinnoöden utsatta av den patriarkala ordningen i Tornedalen, en kulturell region i Norrbotten. Syftet med denna studie är att genomföra en feministisk och genusorienterad analys av romanen med fokus på situation för kvinnor i ett patriarkalt samhälle, könsskillnader och genusnormerna som orsakar dem. Uppsatsen består av inledningen, sex kapitel, varav två skapar den teoretiska grunden till analysen och fyra innehåller själva analysen, samt avslutningen. I den teoretiska delen av uppsatsen presenteras Tornedalens historia, berättande i romanen, handlingen i boken och dess problematik. Den föreställer också den metodologi som hänvisas till i uppgiften, bl.a. genusteori och teorin om performativitet. I den analytiska delen granskas kvinnornas underlägsna position i samhället, religion och familjen. Frågan om genusnormerna analyseras också ur ett manligt perspektiv. Den genomförda undersökningen och det insamlade materialet har påvisat att könsskillnader är ett resultat av genusnormer ålagda av kulturen som befästas genom upprepning av performativa akter
