“Cry until the world bursts from shame”. Multidirectionality of memory in Charlotte Delbo's “Days and Memory”

Celem tekstu jest zbadanie tego, w jaki sposób doświadczenie pobytu w obozie koncentracyjnym i pamięć o tym doświadczeniu wpływają na postrzeganie i pamiętanie innych masowych zbrodni i aktów przemocy w tekstach Charlotte Delbo. Głównymi tekstami poddawanymi analizie są La „Mémoire et les jours” oraz „Spectres, mes compagnons” autorstwa tej francuskiej pisarki. Autorka śledzi, na jakie sposoby przejawia się w tekście figura widma i dlaczego pisarka często decyduje się na użycie właśnie tej metafory. Analizowany jest także obraz kobiet w tekstach Delbo, który jest podstawą do zakreślenia powinności świadka. Nakładanie się na siebie pamięci różnych jednostek, narodów i kultur omawiane jest w oparciu o transkulturowe koncepcjach pamięci zbiorowej opracowanych w ostatnich latach (pamięć wielokierunkowa, palimsestowa, complicitous memory) oraz wspólnym dla nich modelu „węzłów pamięci”.

The paper has for its aim to examine the way in which the experience of concentration camp and memory of this experience influence the perception and remembering of other mass crimes and acts of violence in Charlotte Delbo’s texts. Main analysed texts are “Days and Memory” and “Spectres, mes compagnons” by this French writer. Paper’s author traces in what ways the figure of the spectre appears in the text and why the writer often chooses to use this particular metaphor. Image of women, as a base for outlining witness’ duty, is also analysed. Overlapping of memories of different individuals, nations and cultures is discussed in reference to recent transcultural theories of memory (multidirectional memory, palimpsestic memory, complicitous memory) and to “knots of memory” model which those theories share.
