Jewish life in Maghreb countries and Palestine in 19th century paintings

Praca analizuje tematykę obrazów powstałych w XIX wieku przedstawiających życie żydowskie na terenie Maghrebu oraz Palestyny. Wśród omówionych dzieł znalazły się prace artystów takich jak Eugène Delacroix, Théodore Chassériau, Alfred Dehodencq, Gustav Bauernfeind, Alexandre Bida, Wasilij Wiereszczagin oraz Théodore Ralli. W swoich pracach przedstawili oni społeczność żydowską oraz jej funkcjonowanie w świecie kultury arabskiej, odzwierciedlając ich życie codzienne, stroje, a także obowiązujące ich prawodawstwo i koegzystencję pośród dominującej społeczności muzułmańskiej. Zanalizowane zostały również wątki charakterystyczne dla malarstwa ukazującego orient – kobiecość i erotyzm, występujące również w zaprezentowanych obrazach. Skonfrontowane dwa obszary zainteresowań artystów – Maghreb i Palestyna ukazały różne podejście do tematu w malarstwie orientalizmu w kontekście społeczności żydowskich. Szczególną rolę pełni w tym przypadku Jerozolima, będąca centrum religijnym, co powodowało zróżnicowanie tematyczne analizowanych dzieł. W pracy poza analizą malarstwa poruszane zostały także problem orientalizmu, a także zarys historyczny funkcjonowania wyznawców judaizmu w Maghrebie oraz Palestynie pod panowaniem osmańskim.

This thesis presents the analysis of nineteenth-century painting showing Jewish life in Maghreb and Palestine. The paper includes paintings by Eugène Delacroix, Théodore Chassériau, Alfred Dehodencq, Gustav Bauernfeind, Alexandre Bida, Vasily Vereshchagin and Théodore Ralli. They present daily life of Jewish communities, including public and private spaces, dress and legislation of their functioning. The thesis confronts the myth of peaceful coexistence of Jewish and Muslim societies in nineteenth-century in Arab World. The paper confronts two regions of Jewish life – Maghreb and Palestine. Both regions are presents in different ways. Paintings of Maghreb focus on the daily life and the topics typical for Orientalism – eroticism and feminization. On the other side Palestine is presented as a Jewish religious center and focus on the Walling Wall. The thesis contains also a brief history of Jewish communities in Maghreb and Palestine under the Ottoman rules as well as the debate on the issue of Orientalism.
