Surfing in Hawaii and in the USA. The Role of Sport in History.

Celem pracy jest scharakteryzowanie surfingu oraz przedstawienie jego transformacji na przestrzeni wieków. Ze względu na głęboki związek sportu z historią i tradycją hawajską, istotną częścią pracy jest przedstawienie rysu historycznego. W pierwszym rozdziale niniejszej pracy autorka stara się nakreślić obraz antycznego społeczeństwa hawajskiego oraz umiejscowić w nim surfing. Dodatkowo dokonuje próby przedstawienia technicznego aspektu sportu, omawiając poszczególne dyscypliny i rodzaje desek surfingowych popularnych w antyku. Drugi rozdział poświęcony jest historii surfingu od początku amerykańskiej obecności na Hawajach do przeniesienia sportu poza granice archipelagu. Ostatni rozdział pracy dotyczy historii surfingu od II wojny światowej do czasów współczesnych. Poruszane są w nim kwestie komercjalizacji sportu związanej z początkami subkultury surfingu na Złotym Wybrzeżu, obecność surfingu w kulturze popularnej, oraz historia profesjonalnego surfingu. Na potrzeby stworzenia niniejszej pracy autorka zebrała rozmaite źródła – od monografii, przez artykuły naukowe i fragmenty legend, na filmach kończąc, oraz dokonała ich selekcji i analizy. Dzięki omówieniu wielu aspektów surfingu udało się nakreślić przebieg transformacji sportu na przestrzeni wieków.

The aim of this study is to identify the characteristics of surfing as well as its transformation through the ages. As it is deeply rooted in both history and tradition of Hawaii, the historical outline is an essential part of the study. The first chapter focuses on the ancient Hawaii and the place of surfing in the hawaiian tradition. It also deals with the technical aspects of surfing, such as types of surfboards. The second chapter outlines the history of surfing from the beginning of the dominant American presence in Hawaii and the revival of surfing. The third and final chapter looks into the post-World War Two transformation of surfing. It addresses the West Coast surf culture, surfing in popular culture (press, music and film), as well as the history of professional surfing. To write this thesis, the author selected many sources of information, such as books, science articles, ancient legends and movies, and analyzed them. By describing many aspects of surfing, the author was able to provide an outline of the transformation of the sport through the ages.
