Vasyl Stefanyk as the Representative of Halychyna Radicals

One of the more important representatives of the Ukrainian radical movement at the turn of the 19th century in Halychyna was the outstanding writer Vasyl’ Stefanyk. The aim of the article is an attempt to confront his life and the choices he made with the basic ideological principles of the radicals. With regard to this issue, one can see a number of paradoxes. The radicals thought that the pressing rural social problems could be solved by altering the land ownership structure. However, Stefanyk came from a rich peasant family and his father owned a substantial amount of land by local standards. The important element of his social observations was anticlericalism but on the other hand he married a Greek Catholic priest’s daughter and at the end of his life was financially supported by the Greek Catholic metropolitan archbishop Andrei (Sheptyts’kyi). Another surprising fact in his biography is that although Stefanyk was a fierce enemy of falsehood and hypocrisy in social life he took a salary from the Soviet government of Ukraine for some time.

Життя та вибір одного з чільних представників українського радикального руху в Галичині рубежу XIX-XX ст. видатного письменника Василя Стефаника зіставляються з основними ідеологічними принципами галицьких радикалів. Тут бачимо ряд парадоксів. Радикали вважали, що нагальні соціальні проблеми на селі можна вирішити шляхом зміни структури власності на землю. А проте, В.Стефаник походив із заможної селянської родини. Важливим елементом соціальних поглядів письменника був антиклерикалізмом. Але одружився він із дочкою греко-католицького священика, а наприкінці свого життя користувався фінансовою підтримкою греко-католицького митрополита Андрея (Шептицького). Ще одним цікавим фактом у його біографії стало те, що хоча В.Стефаник і був ворогом брехні та лицемірства у суспільному житті, упродовж певного часу він користувався фінансовою підтримкою від уряду радянської України.
