Rastafari: subculture or religious group

Celem pracy jest analiza rastafarianizmu i próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, czym jest ten ruch. Sprawdzone zostało jakie argumenty przytaczają socjologowie uważający w większości przypadku rastafarian za członków subkultury młodzieżowej. Spróbowano także zbadać, ile w rastafarianizmie jest z grupy religijnej oferującej określoną filozofię i styl życia. Zwrócono również uwagę na to, czy rację mają osoby traktujące przedstawicieli ruchu jako grupę młodych osób uzależnionych od narkotyków, o specyficznym wyglądzie, nierzadko będących reprezentantami sekty. W pracy przybliżono odpowiednie kategorie pojęciowe. Uwagę poświęcono rastafarianizmowi jako zjawisku społecznemu, kulturowemu i religijnemu. Ważnym aspektem stała się analiza rozwoju ruchu w Polsce pozwalająca wysnuć wniosek dotyczący tego, czy w przypadku współczesnych polskich rastafarian należałoby mówić o modzie czy też religijności w dobie popkultury.

The main aim of the thesis is to analyze Rastafarianism and attempt to specify what this movement is. Arguments used by sociologists who perceive Rastafarians as members of a youth subculture were examined. The analysis also aimed to determine the extent to which the Rastafarian movement can be understood as a religious group, offering a specific philosophy and way of life. Moreover, it was checked whether people who perceive the representatives of the movement as drug addicted cult followers of a specific appearance make right assumptions. The thesis discussed respective conceptual categories. Rastafarianism was examined as a social, cultural and religious phenomenon. An important aspect of the thesis was the analysis of the development of the movement in Poland, which made it possible to answer the question whether, in the case of contemporary Polish Rastafarians, the movement should be perceived as fashion or maybe as religiosity in the age of pop culture.
