In Tibetan areas, there are many different ways of disposing of corpses. Early Tibetan writers classified these according to the four elements of earth, water, fire and air, for instance burial, immersion, cremation and exposure. The last one has two types: sky burial and preservation of the mummified body.Presently, only cremation and sky burial constitute important rites that are still commonly performed in Tibet. This paper provides a brief introduction of Tibetan death rituals and funeral ceremonies, focusing on the specific steps of sky burial in Rebgong area (Rebgong County, Rma lho Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, China). It presents the results of the author's fieldwork and examines the process of two families’ funeral rituals, explaining what should be done to prepare a human before their death and after their death, how the corpse should be treated, and the rules of behavior for the mourning family members.
