Truths and Myths About Wild West. The World Created in Films Versus Reality

Praca ta ukazuje jak western jako gatunek filmowy w swych odsłonach przedstawia wydarzenia z okresu podboju i kolonizacji, a w późniejszym czasie także i życia na Zachodzie Stanów Zjednoczonych i konfrontuje ten filmowy obraz z prawdą historyczną. Autorka postawiła sobie jako cel pracy ukazanie, że świat kreowany w westernach znacznie odbiega od rzeczywistości. W pierwszym rozdziale opisała jak wyglądał proces powstawania amerykańskiego Zachodu, od momentu przybycia Europejczyków, poprzez proces kształtowania się pogranicza i zasiedlania Dzikiego Zachodu. Wyjaśniła termin "Dziki Zachód", który posiada dwa znaczenia. Autorka przedstawiła również sylwetkę kowboja, jego pochodzenie, co robił i jak był postrzegany na dziewiętnastowiecznym Zachodzie. W rozdziale drugim opisała jak powstał mit Dzikiego Zachodu i jak, dzięki mitotwórczym właściwościom kultury popularnej, był on utrwalany i powielany. W kolejnym rozdziale poruszyła kwestię westernów w amerykańskiej kinematografii. Autorka wyjaśniła co to jest western i jakie są jego cechy gatunkowe oraz przedstawiła rozwój tego gatunku od momentu jego powstania do czasów współczesnych. Ponadto, zaprezentowała główne postaci westernów oraz to, jak się zmieniały na przestrzeni lat. W ostatnim rozdziale autorka porównała świat prezentowany w westernach z rzeczywistością. Poddała analizie historyczne i powszechnie znane postaci Dzikiego Zachodu oraz wydarzenia, a także ogólnie panujące poglądy i schematy, którymi posługuje się western. To wszystko zostało skonfrontowane z rzeczywistością. Autorka ukazała, że świat kreowany w filmach w znacznym stopniu odbiega od prawdy historycznej i rzeczywistości, podkreślając jednak, że nie wszystkie filmy o Dzikim Zachodzie ukazują jego zakłamany obraz.

This work shows how western as a movie genre in its productions presents events concerning the conquest, colonization and life on the West of the United States of America, and confronts them with the historical truth.The author's aim was to show that the world created in westerns is almost completely different than the reality. In the first chapter she presented how the process of creating the american West looked like, from the arrival of the Europeans, through the process of creating the borderland and colonization of the Wild West. She explained the term "Wild West" which has two meanings. The author also presented the character of a cowboy, his origin, what he did and how he was perceived on the West in the 19th century. In the second chapter she descibed how the myth of the Wild West was created and how it was preserved and reiterated thanks to the populat culture. In another chapter she described westerns in american cinematography. The author explained what the western is and what are the characteristic features of that genre. She also presented the development of that genre, from its creation till now. She presented the main characters of the western and described how they were changing through years. In the last chapter the author compared the world presented in the western with the reality. She analized those historical and generally known characters of the Wild West, the events, opinions and schemes used in westerns. All that was confronted with reality. The author showed that the world created in films is almost completely different from the historical truth and reality. She also emphasised that not all films about Wild West present its false image.
