Feminizm w "Bostończykach" Henry'ego Jamesa

Celem niniejszej pracy jest badanie wątku feministycznego oraz charakterystyka postaci kobiecych w utworze Bostończycy autorstwa Henry’ego Jamesa.Badania rozpoczynają się identyfikacją w powieści elementów realistycznych dotyczących ruchu feministycznego w drugiej połowie dziewiętnastego wieku w Ameryce, a w szczególności w Bostonie, w stanie Massachussetts i w Nowym Jorku. Wyszczególnione zostały następujące elementy: zaangażowanie kobiet w życiu publicznym, ich rola zawodowa i humanitarna w społeczeństwie oraz ich funkcja w ruchu feministycznym, głoszącym równouprawnienie kobiet i mężczyzn. Zilustrowana jest też charakterystyczna dla końca dziewiętnastego wieku przyjaźń pomiędzy dwiema kobietami, które razem mieszkają i pracują. Następnie, rozważania dotyczą obrazu ruchu feministycznego oraz sytuacji kobiet danego okresu czasowego nakreślonego przez samego autora, zwracając szczególną uwagę na reakcyjny stosunek wobec ruchu, aprobujący wizerunek kobiety w domu, oraz na zagrażającą istniejącemu systemowi patriarchalnemu partycypację kobiet na arenie publicznej. Natomiast, charakterystyka postaci kobiecych skupia się na bohaterkach feministkach i opozycjonistkach.W rezultacie, praca ta przedstawia obraz ruchu feministycznego i sytuacji kobiet w drugiej połowie dziewiętnastego wieku, w Bostonie, w stanie Massachusetts, widziane oczami samego autora, Henry’ego Jamesa.

The aim of the presented thesis is the exploration of feminism and the portrayal of female characters within "The Bostonians" by Henry James. The examination initiates with an identification within the novel of the realistic issues of the second half of the nineteenth-century women’s movement in America, particularly in Boston, Massachusetts and New York City. The emphasis is put on women’s public involvement, especially their professional and humanitarian role within the society, which includes their widely spread activism in the lecturing circuit, while advocating their equality with men. Special attention is also paid to a relationship between two women living and working together, as a common friendship in the author’s times. Then, Henry James’s rendering of the movement and women’s condition of the time is explored by investigating the reactionary portrayal of the movement, the trope of the angel-in-the house, and the threatening to the patriarchal system women’s invasion of male territory in the public sphere. Finally, the selected female characters are analyzed by scrutinizing their motives, inner thoughts, and attitudes towards the women’s movement, its goals, and its members. In conclusion, this thesis examines both the author’s portrayal of the women’s condition and the suffrage movement towards the end of the nineteenth-century as observed by Henry James in Boston, Massachusetts; and the description of the female heroines, both the supporters of feminism and the anti-feminists, illustrating their fears and hopes that women felt at that time.
