The aim of this paper is to investigate the selected memes, basing on the incongruity theory as well as on the Script Semantic Theory of Humour by Victor Raskin.First chapter discusses different definitions of humour and presents an overview of the theories of humour concentrating mostly on the two above-mentioned theories which will be used to analyse the selected examples. This chapter concerns also the roles of humour, the differences in approaching humour and types of humour.Second chapter concerns the channels of modern communication that uses both visual and verbal aids. The origin and the main types of the Internet memes are discussed. The focus of the paper is on the stock character macros which consist of a visual meme template and one or two verbal captions. The elements that contribute to the humorous effect are enumerated and discussed. In the last chapter the incongruity theory and the Script Semantic Theory of Humour by Victor Raskin are applied on the selected examples of two groups of Internet memes. The incongruity and its resolution are investigated and the memes are ranked accordingly. The author uses the Script Semantic Theory of Humour to show the overlap of two different scripts. The conducted analysis has not established the direct correlation between the level of overlap and the level of the funniness of the meme.
