"National Fictions". Alternate History in Polish Literature after 1989.

Praca "Fikcje narodowe. Historie alternatywne w literaturze polskiej po 1989 r." ma na celu analizę zjawiska, jakim są na polskim rynku powieści z gatunku historii alternatywnej. Autorka stawia tezę, że historia alternatywna to gatunek uwikłany w sieć społeczno-kulturowo-politycznych zależności, który sytuuje się wobec dyskusji nad polską historią, a tym samym - polską tożsamością narodową. W pierwszym rozdziale określona zostaje definicja historii alternatywnej oraz zakres tematyczny pracy. Autorka podkreśla, że zamierza zająć się w swojej pracy historiami alternatywnymi koncentrującymi się wokół trzech istotnych dla historii Polski wydarzeń: powstania styczniowego, bitwy warszawskiej oraz II wojny światowej. W drugim rozdziale opisana zostaje tradycja myślenia kontrfaktycznego na gruncie historiografii oraz dzieje historii alternatywnej jako gatunku literackiego (w perspektywie literatury amerykańskiej oraz polskiej). Kolejne rozdziały stanowią analizę wybranych dzieł z gatunku historii alternatywnych. Najpierw przedstawione zostają powieści "Gambit Wielopolskiego" Przechrzty oraz "Orzeł bielszy niż gołębica" Lewandowskiego, które opisują alternatywne dzieje powstania styczniowego i sytuują się wobec dyskusji nad sensem polskich powstań narodowych. W kolejnym rozdziale analizowana jest "Jedna przegrana bitwa" Wolskiego oraz "Xavras Wyżryn" Dukaja, książki opowiadające o świecie, w którym Polska przegrała bitwę warszawską. W następnym rozdziale, koncentrującym się wokół II wojny światowej, omówiony zostaje "Wallenrod" Wolskiego, "Powroty" Pietrasiewicza i Bogaczyka, oraz "Burza. Ucieczka z Warszawy '40" Macieja Parowskiego. Ostatni, szósty rozdział pracy, zawiera podsumowanie badań i odpowiada na pytanie, dlaczego czytamy i piszemy historie alternatywne.

The aim of "National Fictions. Alternate History in Polish Literature after 1989" is an analysis of the phenomenon of the genre of alternate history. The author claims that in Poland alternate history is a literary genre which is entangled in the web of social, cultural and political relations. It also situates itself against discussions about Polish history and, thus, about Polish national identity.In the first chapter the definition of alternate history and the scope of the Thesis are determined. The author underlines that her discussion of Polish alternate history is to revolve around these novels that describe three events which were formative for Polish national identity: the January Uprising, the Battle of Warsaw and World War II. In the second chapter, the tradition of counterfactual thinking and the history of alternate history as a literary genre are described. The chapters that follow analyse and interpret selected novels. In the third chapter two novels are presented: Przechrzta's "Gambit Wielopolskiego" and Lewandowski's "Orzeł bielszy niż gołębica". Both describe an alternate history of the January Uprising and discuss the problem of Polish national uprisings. In the next chapter Wolski's "Jedna przegrana bitwa" and Dukaj's "Xavras Wyżryn", novels that portrays the world in which Poland has lost the Battle of Warsaw, are analysed. Next, the novels that focus on World War II are interpreted: Wolski's "Wallenrod", Pietrasiewicz and Bogaczyk's "Powroty" and Parowski's "Burza. Ucieczka z Warszawy '40". The last, sixth chapter, recapitulates the Thesis and seeks to answer the question of why we write and read alternate histories.
