Tematem pracy jest wykorzystanie elementów pamięci zbiorowej oraz historii jako instrumentów polityki. Zasadniczą kwestią poruszaną w pracy jest problematyka tożsamości europejskiej, rozumianej jako konstrukt, którego proces budowy miał rozpocząć się wraz z ideą zjednoczonej Europy, a następnie rozwijać się wraz z przystępowaniem kolejnych członków. Poprzez wyjaśnienie roli, jaką pełnią pamięć zbiorowa i historia w budowaniu poszczególnych społeczeństw, przedstawione zostają przykłady wykorzystywania powyższych mechanizmów w celach politycznych, prowadzących do wzajemnego poznania i poszanowania historii państw europejskich. Przedmiotem badań są tworzone w tym celu instytucje kultury i organizacje pożytku publicznego, a także narracje historyczne powstające w wyniku ich działalności. Większość omawianych instytucji znajduje się w państwach Europy Środkowej i Wschodniej, zostały jednak przedstawione w kontekście międzynarodowych debat poruszających kwestie historyczne oraz na tle przyjętych przez państwa członkowskie Unii Europejskiej standardów. Okres poddany badaniom rozpoczyna się od przełomu roku 1989 oraz wzmożonych procesów demokratyzacji po upadku komunizmu i obejmuje zarówno już działające, jak i wciąż pozostające w fazie realizacji (do roku 2015) przykłady instytucji.

The theme of the work is to use elements of collective memory and history as policy instruments in the process of integration. The fundamental issue in this work is the issue of European identity, understood as a construct, the construction process was to start from the idea of ​​a united Europe, and then develop with the admission of new members. By clarifying the role that collective memory and history in building the societies, presented are examples of use of the above mechanisms for political purposes, leading to mutual knowledge and respect for the history of European countries.The research is created for this purpose cultural institutions and public benefit organizations, as well as historical narratives arising out of their operations. Most of these institutions are in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, they have been presented in the context of international debates about historical issues and against the background accepted by the Member States of the European Union standards.The analized period starts since the turn of 1989 and intensified processes of democratization after the fall of communism and includes both already operating and still remain in the implementation phase (in 2015) examples of institutions.
