The different approaches of civil society and politics towards the problem of air pollution. - A case study of Paris.

master
This master thesis discusses the following question: Is the lack of political actions and results against the issue of air pollution in Paris favouring a mobilization of civil society? This research topic is analysed through the rational choice approach and social move-ment theory. Throughout the analysis of semi-structured interviews, an online question-naire and secondary sources the research question and three assumptions are assessed. On the base of the rational choice approach of Karl-Dieter Opp (1998) the factors and incentives for individual’s actions are examined. Additionally, with the help of the so-cial movement theory (Appleton, 2000) associations and collective action are studied. The study revealed that the lack of concern and actions of political actors together with several other factors triggers rational choice thinking within citizens. Moreover, the thesis could show that citizens decide to become involved in association to change the current situation of bad air quality in Paris.pl
