W dramaturgii Ingmara Villqista tragedia ludzkiego istnienia ujawnia się w języku, samotności, poczuciu obcości, relacjach międzyludzkich czy pesymistycznym nastroju, jaki kształtuje w nich ponura metropolia. O popularności dramatopisarza zadecydowało jego zainteresowanie człowiekiem – jego problemami, lękami, dążeniem do szczęścia. Sytuacje, jakie Villqist przedstawia, pochodzą z obserwacji własnego życia codziennego i życia innych ludzi. W dramatach Ingmara Villqista niewiele się dzieje. Jego bohaterami są odmieńcy, którzy zmagają się z samotnością i społecznym odrzuceniem. Ich odmienność wiąże się zarówno z ich zdrowiem fizycznym, jak i psychicznym. Negatywny wpływ na ich psychikę ma przeszłość, o której nie mogą zapomnieć. Pamiętają szczególnie o złych czynach, których się dopuścili, a swoim postępowaniem chcą zmazać swoją winę. Nieustannie towarzyszą im uczucia strachu i cierpienia. Brutalność świata ujawnia się w języku, tak jak w przypadku powieści "Nagrobek z lastryko" Krzysztofa Vargi oraz "Zagłady ludu" Wernera Schwaba. Bohaterowie są uwikłani w skomplikowane relacje z najbliższymi i nieustannie się ranią. Język przepełniony jest peryfrazami i niedomówieniami. Bohaterowie przebywający w stanie ogromnego cierpienia nie są w stanie wypowiadać się jasno. Dialogi, chociaż szczere, są w dużej mierze chaotyczne. Dramatopisarz nawiązuje do twórczości skandynawskiej – wykazane zostały inspiracje "Upiorami" Henrika Ibsena oraz kinem Bergmana i Larsa von Triera. Przestrzeń u dramatopisarza podzielona jest na wioskę i miasto. W większości utworów mowa jest o tajemniczej, nadmorskiej miejscowości Ellmit, w której znajduje się Zakład – miejsce przyciągające i odstraszające bohaterów.

Tragedy of human life in Ingmar Villqist’s dramas can be seen in the language, the feeling of alienation, interpersonal relations and pessimistic mood, which is caused by the grim metropolis. What made the playwright popular is his interest in man – his problems, fears, pursuit of happiness. The situations that he describes are taken from the ordinary life of ordinary people. Not much happens in his plays. The characters are strange people, dealing with loneliness and social rejection. The strangeness concerns their physical and mental health. They are negatively influenced by their past that they cannot forget. They remember the bad things that they have done and they want to fix them. However, fear and suffering never leave them. The brutality of the world is shown in the language used in Krzysztof Varga’s "Nagrobek z lastryko" and Werner Schwab’s "Zagłada ludu". The main characters are caught in complicated relations with their families and they constantly hurt each other. Their language is full of periphrases and insinuations. They are not able to speak plain and simple. The dialogues are chaotic. The playwright refers to Scandinavian literature – he was inspired by Henrik Ibsen’s "Upiory" and films made by Bergman and Lars von Trier. The action always takes place in a village and a town. In almost every play there is a mysterious place near the sea, called Ellmit. There is the Factory in there – a place which draws and scares the main characters at the same time.
