Nadrzędnym celem niniejszej pracy jest udowodnienie, że główni bohaterowie „Hańby” J. M. Coetzeego, „Ludzkiej skazy” P. Rotha oraz „Złotego pelikana” S. Chwina, z powodu wkroczenia na teren tabu zmuszeni są zmierzyć się z serią traumatycznych doświadczeń. Ironia ich losu zasadza się na znaczeniu imion, które mają wpływ na ich działania. Pomimo niebezpieczeństwa utraty tożsamości, wszyscy trzej mężczyźni najpierw staczają się na dno, by następnie zmierzyć się z duchami przeszłości i wyjść z tej walki zwycięsko.

The main goal of the dissertation is to prove that the main characters of J. M. Coetzee's „Disgrace”, P. Roth's „The Human Stain” and S. Chwin's „Złoty pelikan” collide with series of traumatic experience due to entering the realm of taboo. The irony of their lives consists in their names' meanings: they have influence on protagonists' actions. Despite the danger of identity's loss, all three men firstly go to the dogs, then fight with the spooks of the past, and finally get out of it successfully.
