Before the ornament became a crime : a history of changes of the attitude toward the architectonical category of "ornamentum" and the history of the road to the modern architecture

Artykuł ukazuje ewolucyjną drogę od architektury historycznej, poprzez secesję po styl międzynarodowy wykorzystując analizę stosunku poszczególnych etapu rozwoju teorii architektonicznej do kategorii ornamentum. Punktem wyjścia rozważań jest albertiańskie rozróżnienie między belezza i ornamentum oraz metafora rdzenia i okrywki. Analizie poddane zostały kategorie: skorupa - typowa dla historyzmu i secesji, pojęcie maski, semperowska koncepcja Beklaidung oraz wyprowadzona przez Ottona Wagnera koncepcja wynikania dekoracji ze struktury budowli. Druga część pokazuje na realizacjach Wagneriańskich próby zastosowania teoretycznego paradygmatu w praktyce rozważając sposoby dekorowania wiedeńskich realizacji.

The paper provides an analysis of „the evolutionary way to modernism” starting from historicism, through so-called secessionist architecture up to the international modernism period. The theoretical frame chosen here is an analysis of the attitude of particular phases od the development of the new style to the ornamentum category. The starting point was the L. B. Alberti’s disinction between belezza and ornamentum categories and the metaphor od the core and shell proposed by W. Oechslin. Article deliberates over categories: a shell, a mask, a G. Semper’s Bekleidung and finally O. Wagner’s paradigm of the architecture and the place of decoration in it. The second part provides an exemplification of the use of the paradigm in practice in Wagner’s realisations (Postparkasse, Kirche am Steinhof).
