Nazism and the Second World War seen by a dwarf in the Günter Grass' novel "The Tin Drum"

Celem pracy jest zestawienie scen związanych z wojną lub nazizmem i ich interpretacja. Praca jest podzielona na siedem rozdziałów: pierwszy przedstawia rolę historii w ogólnym rozumieniu w powieści Grassa, kolejne analizują poszczególne sceny z książki; ostatni natomiast jest całkowicie poświęcony głównej postaci, Oskarowi. Następujące obszary tematyczne podlegają interpretacji: relacja pomiędzy polityką a religią, przedstawienie bitwy, propaganda nazistowska, opis przedstawicieli narodu żydowskiego. Kolejnym celem pracy było zbadanie, czy dziecięca perspektywa narratora wpływa na opis historycznych wydarzeń.

The purpose of this paper is to present a juxtaposition of scenes associated with war or Nazism, and their interpretation. The paper is divided into seven chapters: the first one introduces a role of history and its general meaning in the Grass’ novel. Subsequent chapters analyze particular scenes from the book; the last one, however, is entirely devoted to the main character, Oscar. Thematic areas, that are subjects of interpretation, are following: relation between politics and religion, presentation of a battle, Nazi propaganda, description of representatives of Jewish People. Another purpose of this paper is to examine if a child’s perspective of the narrator influences the description of historical events.

Das Hauptziel dieser Arbeit ist es die Szenen, die mit dem Krieg oder dem Nationalsozialismus, zusammenzusetzen und zu interpretieren. Die Arbeit ist in sieben Kapiteln gegliedert: des erste Kapitel befasst sich mit der Rolle der Geschichte im Allgemeinen im Buch; die nächsten Kapiteln analysieren die auserwählten Szenen aus dem Roman; das letzte Kapitel ist ganzheitlich dem Protagonisten Oskar gewidmet. Folgende Themen werden analysiert: die Relation zwischen Politik und Religion, Darstellung einer Schlacht, nationalsozialistische Propaganda, das Judentum. Der Ziel dieser Arbeit ist ebenso die Ermittlung, ob die Kinderperspektive des Erzählers die Darstellung der historischen Ereignisse beeinflusst.
