Rakish and creative Cracow - nightlife in the club " The Beautiful Dog"

Spaceruję uliczkami Krakowa. Na jednej z nich, na ul. Bożego Ciała, przed klubem nocnym Piękny Pies, jak prawie co noc, stoi grupa ludzi. Rozmawiają, palą papierosy, są pod wpływem alkoholu. Rozpoznaję w nich również siebie podczas wyjść do Pięknego Psa. Tym razem mogę spojrzeć na tę sytuację z pozycji obserwatora. Jest zimno. Zastanawiam się, dlaczego marzną, rozmawiają w miejscu, gdzie jest głośna muzyka, która częściowo zagłusza ich rozmowę, zarywają noc? Dlaczego tu przyszli? Dlaczego niektórzy wracają tu tak często? Dlaczego sama chodzę najczęściej właśnie do Pięknego Psa? Dlaczego moi znajomi przychodzą tutaj? Dlaczego akurat tu tak często można spotkać znane osoby? Skąd wszystkie funkcjonujące w kulturze, szczególnie wśród mieszkańców Krakowa, opowieści, książki i piosenki na temat tego miejsca? Wykorzystując pozycję badacza postanawiam przyjrzeć się bliżej Pięknemu Psu i dowiedzieć. Niezwykle istotny okazuje się kontekst, w którym funkcjonuje klub - kontekst miasta Krakowa i jego specyfiki rzutującej również na życie kawiarniane i nocne. Przyglądam się bliżej bogatej tradycji życia nocnego krakowskich artystów, Młodej Polski, roli alkoholu w tworzeniu się specyficznego stylu życia. Własne doświadczenie, obserwacja, wywiady z bywalcami i lektura, niektórych z licznych publikacji pozwalają na nakreślenie mapy krakowskich lokali, które zdecydowanie wyróżniają się na tle reszty. Autorefleksja, będąca podstawą pracy nadaje jej autoetnograficznego charakteru. Poznaję miejsca, gdzie w cenie jest nie tylko hulaszczy, ale również hulaszczo-twórczy styl życia oraz dokładniej przyglądam się Pięknemu Psu.

On the night streets of one of Cracow’s most popular district Kazimierz there are always lots of people, no matter what season. In local famous clubs tourists and residents gather to take part in social life. Such places are in every big city. Nowy Świat in Warsaw, Williamsburg in New York, etc. I see them smoking, talking to each other, being covered in sweat after dancing, drinking together. This night I wander alone admiring beautiful Kazimierz and I pass next to one of the popular clubs in which I spent also many hours of my life dancing and socializing called „The Beautiful Dog”. I have possibility to look at the situation from outside as I walk not in a hurry and I am alone. That is the moment when question arises: Why they come here? Why some of the people come back here so often? Why most of my friends come to this particular club? Why so many famous people can be seen here? What is the origin of all stories, books and songs about this place? With the help of researcher's perspective I decide to take a closer look at “The Beautiful Dog” . What turns out to be very important is the context in which the club exists – context of the city of Cracow and its specifics that has an impact on the nightlife. I examine the rich nightlife tradition of Cracow artists, Young Poland, role of the alcohol in creation of nightlife specifics. My own experience, observation, interviews with the barflies and reading some of the books on this topic let me outline the map of Cracow clubs which are definetely different than others. Autoreflection that is the basis of the works makes the work also autoethnographic. I meet places, where not only rackish lifestyle is that what counts, but also creativity and imagination and I take closer look at “The Beautiful Dog”.
