Niniejsza praca dotyczy powieści Jerzego Andrzejewskiego Ciemności kryją ziemię. Jej celem jest udowodnienie, że omawiana powieść może być traktowana jako parabola, gdyż zawiera uniwersalne przesłanie, dotyczące mechanizmów funkcjonowania systemów władzy opartych na terrorze. Wprowadzenie porusza zagadnienia gatunku utworu i jego tematu, którym jest hiszpańska inkwizycja. Przybliża także okoliczności powstania powieści i prezentuje inspiracje autora, z których najważniejszą jest postać Wielkiego Inkwizytora z Braci Karamazow Fiodora Dostojewskiego. Kolejne rozdziały dotyczą trzech kluczowych problemów powieści: idei Królestwa Bożego na ziemi, osobowości przywódcy inkwizycji – ojca Tomasza Torquemady i przemian wewnętrznych brata Diega Manete. Rozważenie tych zagadnień w odniesieniu do wydarzeń z różnych epok historycznych prowadzi do wniosku, że ukazane przez autora prawidłowości mają charakter uniwersalny, a powieść Ciemności kryją ziemię, jako parabola, jest zawsze aktualnym ostrzeżeniem przed używaniem przemocy w celu wprowadzania w życie utopijnej wizji doskonale uporządkowanego świata.

This thesis refers to the novel And Darkness Covered the Earth by Jerzy Andrzejewski. Its aim is to prove that it is possible to consider this novel as a parable, because it contains a universal message concerning mechanisms of power in systems based on terror. The introduction discusses the book’s genre and its theme, i.e. the Spanish Inquisition. It also presents the circumstances under which the novel was written and the author’s inspirations, the most important one being the figure of the Grand Inquisitor from The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Further chapters concern three key issues of the novel: the idea of the Kingdom of God on earth, the personality of the Inquisition’s leader – father Tomas Torquemada and the spiritual changes of friar Diego Manete. Considering these issues, in reference to historical events from various ages, draws to a conclusion that the regularities showed by Andrzejewski are universal and the novel And Darkness Covered the Earth, as a parable, is a ever-present warning against the usage of violence to impose a utopian vision of a perfectly organized world.
