Lion in Lviv and his meaning for the city and citizens

Praca odnosi się do zagadnienia: lew we Lwowie. Jest to próba opisania znaczenia wizerunku lwa dla samego miasta jak i jego mieszkańców. W odniesieniu do motywu lwa przeanalizowane i opisane zostały takie obszary jak: historyczny zarys powstania miasta, obecność lwa w legendach o założeniu Lwowa, heraldyka miasta, architektura (kamienice, budowle, kościoły), przestrzeń miejska (pomniki), przestrzeń sepulkralna, literatura. Ważnym tematem opisanym w rozdziale ostatnim jest komercjalizacja wizerunku i motywu lwa oraz jego rożne formy obecności we współczesnym przemyśle pamiątkarskim. Celem pracy jest zweryfikowanie tezy o tym, czy symbolika lwa jest w dalszym ciągu dla dzisiejszych Lwowian ważna i aktualna. Podsumowując ujęte w powyższej pracy argumenty i przebadane obszary można stwierdzić, że lew jest nieodłącznym symbolem Lwowa, czego przykłady widać w architekturze, heraldyce i historii miasta. Wraz z rozwojem cywilizacyjnym, zmianie uległy formy odniesienia do symboliki lwa. Użycie tegoż motywy przez przemysł pamiątkarski jedynie potwierdza tezę o aktualności i ważności symboliki lwa we współczesnym Lwowie.

Master’s dissertation rewers to the issue: a lion in Lviv. It is an attempt to describe the signifiance of the image of the lion for the city and its inhabitants. In relation to the lion theme I analyze and describe such areas as: historical outline of founding the Town, the presence of a lion in legends about the Lviv, the city heraldry, architecture (houses, buildings, churches), urban space (monuments), graveyard, literature. An important topic described in the last chapter is the commercialization of lion motif and its various forms of presence in the souvenir industry. The aim of dissetration is to verify the thesis whether the lion theme is still important for today’s inhabitants of Lviv. Summing up the lion is an integral symbol of Lviv, examples of which can be seen in the architecture, heraldry and history of the city. With the development of civilization, form of reference to the symbolism of the lion, have changed. Using this motif by the souvenir industry only confirms the thesis about the validity of the lion symbolism in the modern Lviv.
