Body and Clothing aesthetics, and its Dependance on the Social Status of Women in Edo Period

Od zarania dziejów w Japonii estetyka ciała i ubioru powiązana była ze statusem społecznym jednostki. Już najstarsze zabytki kultury Japońskiej - figurki dogū i haniwa - wskazują na relację pomiędzy rolą społeczną a wyglądem zewnętrznym kobiet. Celem niniejszej pracy jest zbadanie, w jaki sposób zależność ta wyglądała w epoce Edo i jakie czynniki miały wpływ na zmieniającą się estetykę kobiecego piękna. Autor obszernie omawia historię i społeczeństwo epoki, uwzględniając najważniejsze zmiany wprowadzone przez Tokugawę Ieyasu w XVII wieku i ich wpływ na rozwój społeczeństwa japońskiego. Następnie przeanalizowane zostają zarówno zmiany, jakie zachodziły w obrębie tradycji nakładania makijażu, dbania o ciało, układania fryzur, jak i historia i estetyka ubioru kobiet w epoce Edo. Poruszona zostaje tematyka kultury kąpieli, znaczenia włosów w kulturze Japonii, najważniejszych pojęć japońskiej estetyki czy rozwoju przemysłu modowego. Analiza ta dotyczy kobiet z czterech głównych warstw społecznych tamtego okresu: wojowników, chłopów, rzemieślników i kupców, ze szczególnym naciskiem na idee powstałe w wyniku rozwoju i bogacenia się klasy mieszczan.

From the dawn of the Japanese history the aesthetics of body and clothing have been connected with one’s social status. The connection between woman’s role in the society and her appearance can be traced back to the time of the oldest relics of Japanese culture – the dogū and haniwa figurines. This thesis concentrates on finding the answer to the question if and how the mentioned connection applied to the women of Edo period and what were the factors that influenced the ever-changing aesthetics. Autor of the thesis widely describes the history and the socjety of mentioned period, ta king in the consideration changes introduced by Tokugawa Ieyasu in XVII century and their influence on the development of the Edo period society. Thereafter autor analyses changes that were occuring within the tradition of putting on makeup, body care, styling one’s hair as well as the history and aesthetics of women in Edo period. What is more, the autor attempts to analyze, among the others, such topics as the bathing culture, the meaning and importance of hair in Japanese culture, ones of the most important concepts of Japanese aesthetics and the growth of the fashion industry. This analysis focuses on the women of four main classes: warriors, peasants, craftsmen and merchants with a particular emphasis placed on the concepts and ideas that came to existance as a result of the growth and the enrichment of the townsmen.
