Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza dwóch angielskich przekładów Sklepów cynamonowych, zbioru opowieści Brunona Schulza wydanego w 1933 r. Pierwszy z omawianych tekstów to oficjalny przekład Celiny Wieniewskiej z 1963 r. zatytułowany The Street of Crocodiles. Drugim jest dostępne w Internecie tłumaczenie Johna Currana Davisa, pod tytułem The Cinnamon Shops. Dokładna data jego upublicznienia nie jest znana. Teksty są analizowane w porównaniu z oryginałem.Pierwsza cześć pracy poświęcona jest osobie autora oraz Sklepom cynamonowym. Zawiera ona omówienie biografii, twórczości oraz recepcji Brunona Schulza. Następnie przedstawiony jest sam utwór, poświęcając wiele uwagi aspektowi języka w prozie autora. Pierwszy rozdział kończy się omówieniem historii tłumaczeń Sklepów cynamonowych oraz przedstawieniem sylwetek Celiny Wieniewskiej i Johna Currana Davisa. Druga część wyznacza ramy teoretyczne do analizy tekstów, które opierają się na metodzie opisowych badań przekładu oraz na strategiach domestykacji i egzotyzacji.Część praktyczna to analiza wybranych przykładów z dwóch opowiadań wchodzących w skład zbioru, Sierpnia i Pana. Dokładna analiza pozwala odkryć różne rozwiązania stosowane przez tłumaczy w procesie przekładu. Rozwiązania te wskazują z kolei na stosowane przez nich strategie. Na podstawie analizy okazuje się, że Celina Wieniewska zastosowała strategię domestykującą, ukierunkowaną na docelowy tekst i odbiorcę. John Curran Davis natomiast skłonił się ku strategii egzotyzującej, ukierunkowanej na tekst źródłowy. Wyniki analizy wydają się być blisko powiązane z kontekstami, w jakich powstawały oba przekłady. Oficjalne tłumaczenie Celiny Wieniewskiej było zlecone przez wydawnictwo i siłą rzeczy musiało się podporządkować strategii nakierowanej na potencjalnego odbiorcę. John Curran Davis, nie będąc w żaden sposób ograniczonym przez czynniki zewnętrzne, mógł skupić się na tekście źródłowym.

The objective of the thesis is to provide an analysis of two English translations of Bruno Schulz’s Sklepy cynamonowe, a collection of short stories published in 1933. The first translation is the official Celina Wieniewska’s The Street of Crocodilespublished in 1963. The second text is a recent online translation by John Curran Davis entitled The Cinnamon Shops. The publication date of this unofficial translation is unknown. Both texts are analysed in comparison with the original.The first part of the thesis is devoted to Bruno Schulz and Sklepy cynamonowe. It includes the presentation of the author’s life, works and reception. Further, the work in question is discussed, paying special attention to the language. Finally, an overview of translations is presented, followed by notes on Wieniewska and Davis. The second part provides a theoretical framework for the analysis, based on the Descriptive Translation Studies and the strategies of domestication and foreignization.The practical part is an analysis of examples selected from two short stories, Sierpień and Pan. It is presented in a form of coupled segments of ST and both TTs. The close analysis reveals different solutions employed by both translators in the process of translation. These solutions are indicative of different translation strategies. The outcomes show that Wieniewska followed a target oriented domesticating strategy, while Davis opted for a foreignizing source text oriented strategy. The results seem to be interconnected with the contexts in which both translations were created. Wieniewska’s official translation, commissioned by a publishing house, had to conform to the target audience oriented strategy. Davis was free of any such constraints and therefore able to focus more on the source text itself.
