Hybrydowa tożsamość w powieściach Michaela Ondaatje „Oczy Buddy” oraz „ Angielski Pacjent”

„Oczy Buddy” oraz „Angielski Pacjent”, powieści autorstwa Michaela Ondaatje, poruszają problematykę tożsamości, szczególnie zaś jej redefinicji, będącej wynikiem doświadczenia przez bohaterów terroru wojny. Niniejsza praca ma na celu przedstawienie procesu rekonstrukcji tożsamości oraz ciągłego jej odkrywania, ukazując jednocześnie relacje, jakie bohaterowie kreują między sobą. Sposób badawczy, jaki autorka tejże pracy wybrała, aby przeanalizować teksty obu powieści, zwraca uwagę na znaczenie transnacjonalizmu oraz transkulturowości, aby ostatecznie ujawnić istotę hybrydowości kulturowej. W pracy tej omówione zostały komponenty tożsamości, jak również proces wychodzenia poza ich ścisłe struktury, co daje bohaterom możliwość znalezienia się w przestrzeni pomiędzy oraz osiągnięcia stanu hybrydowości. Niniejsza rozprawa odkrywa również niejednoznaczność samego autora, który z jednej strony dąży do internacjonalizmu, z drugiej jednak prezentuje ogromną wartość tradycji. Ponadto, ukazuje ona, że omawiane powieści, choć osadzone w różnych realiach, podejmują podobną problematykę i koncentrują się na człowieczeństwie, które Ondaatje uważa za najistotniejszą cechę, i które zdaje się według niego łączyć wszystkich bohaterów, niezależnie od ich pochodzenia. Tożsamość, jak zaprezentowano w niniejszej pracy, podlega ciągłym zmianom i rozwojowi, a zatem nie jest ona zespołem cech stałych. Dlatego został omówiony także temat pustyni jako synonimu zmieniającej się tożsamości.

“Anil’s Ghost” and “The English Patient”, novels by Michael Ondaatje, both deal with the problem of redefinition of the characters' identity after experiencing the horror of war. This thesis demonstrates the process of rediscovering and reconstructing of identity, paying particular attention to the relations the characters create with each other. The approach which the authoress has chosen to analyse the texts is the one which emphasizes the importance of transnationalism and transculturality, in order to ultimately reveal the significance of the hybrid solution. The thesis discusses levels of one's identity and demonstrates how the characters cross their fixed boundaries to find themselves in the in-between and achieve the state of hybridity. Also, it exposes Ondaatje's own in-betweenness, that is, his urge to internationalism and traditions at the same time. In addition, the dissertation demonstrates how the novels, though set in different realities, address similar issues, focusing on humanity - the quality which Ondaatje finds the most significant, and which seems to connect all the characters, regardless of their nationality and origin. Identity, as shown here, is subjected to constant development and redefinition, and is not seen as a fixed product. Therefore, the importance of the desert, a synonym of an ever-changing entity, has been discussed.
