abstract in Polish:	Rozprawa poświęcona jest interpretacji utworu „The Midnight” Susan Howe w kontekście literatury anglo-amerykańskiego modernizmu oraz nowoczesnej filozofii. Stanowi zarazem próbę ogólniejszego namysłu nad sposobem, w jaki biegnąca od „The Waste Land” T. S. Eliota tradycja cytacyjno-aluzyjnego pisania uprzywilejowuje alegoryczny model lektury. Analizując wpisany w tę tradycję tekst, autor rozprawy pokazuje, jak alegoria staje się tropem nowoczesnego doświadczenia, a ściślej: trudnego związku jednostek z uniwersum zbiorowej pamięci.
abstract in English:	The thesis aims at interpretation of Susan Howe’s „The Midnight” against the background of Anglo-American Modernist literature and modern philosophy. Analysis of the text is followed by a broader reflection on the way in which citational poetics – typical of the literary tradition originated by T. S. Eliot’s „The Waste Land” – favours allegorical reading. Through the study of Howe’s work the author shows how allegory becomes a trope of modern experience or, specifically, of the difficult relationship of individuals towards collective memory.
