The Kafkaesque Figure of Silence and Its Transpositions in Gustaw Herling-Grudziński’s Short Stories Pieta dell’Isola and Most. Z kroniki naszego miasta

Praca dotyczy figury milczenia prezentowanej przez Franza Kafkę w opowiadaniu Most oraz w liście do Oskara Pollaka. W sposób porównawczy zostaje ukazane przetworzenie owej figury dokonane przez Gustawa Herlinga-Grudzińskiego w utworach Pieta dell'Isola oraz Most. Z kroniki naszego miasta. W kolejnych rozdziałach milczenie jest rozpatrywane z perspektywy tajemnicy cierpienia, śmierci i Zmartwychwstania. Problematyka momentów ciszy dotyczy zarówno struktury opowiadań, prowadzonej narracji, jak i przeżyć samych autorów. W pracy zostaje również poruszona rola figury milczenia w komunikacji międzyludzkiej.

In my thesis I am concerned with the figure of silence which is presented by Franz Kafka in the novel Bridge (Most) and in his letter to Oskar Pollak. A study of the transpositions of this figure, made by Gustaw Herling-Grudziński in his novels Pieta dell'Isola and Most. Z kroniki naszego miasta, is shown here within a comparative perspective. In the following chapters, silence is considered with regard to the mysteries of suffering, death and resurrection. The problem of moments of silence applies to the structure of novels, narrative and authors' biography. In the thesis highlighted is also the role of this figure in everyday communication.
