Sources of funding for non-profit organizations on the example of the Polish Humanitarian Action (PAH)

Celem pracy jest przedstawienie istoty organizacji non-profit i wykorzystywanych przez nie źródeł finansowania oraz analiza i ocena źródeł finansowania Polskiej Akcji Humanitarnej (PAH). Cel został osiągnięty przez opracowanie odpowiedzi na pytania badawcze. W pracy zostały wykоrzystаnе takie metody bаdаwczе jak: metoda historyczna analizy sprawozdań finansowych, analiza literatury przedmiotu i analiza danych wtórnych, do których należały dokumentacja PAH i dane statystyczne.Z przeprowadzonych analiz wynikło, że główne źródła finansowania w latach 2008-2012 dla fundacji PAH stanowiły dotacje od organizacji Unii Europejskiej oraz wpłaty osób prywatnych i prawnych, które łącznie średnio generowały 65 % wszystkich przychodów fundacji. Do silnych stron struktury finansowania i pozyskiwania funduszy przez PAH można zaliczyć: posiadanie lojalnych donatorów, dobrze zorganizowane działania fundraisingowe (marketing i nagłośnienie w mediach), zasadę przejrzystości, płynność finansową. Natomiast słabą stroną jest niski poziom uzyskiwania przychodów z odpisów 1 % podatku.

The purpose of the paper is presentation of the essence of non-profit organizations and their sources of funding as well asthe analysis and evaluation of the sources of funding for the Polish Humanitarian Action (PAH).The goal has been achieved by addressing the research questions. In the paper the following research methods were used: historical analysis of financial reports, literature review and the analysis of secondary sources, which included PAH’s records and statistical data. Based on the analysis it was found the main sources of funding for PAH in the years 2008-2012 were grants from the European Union organizations and the donations of private individuals and legal entities, which together generated an average of 65% of total revenues of the foundation. The strengths of the foundation funding structure and of its fundraising activities include: loyal donors, well organized marketing efforts and publicity in the media, the principle of transparency, liquidity. However, theweakness is the low level of revenue from the 1% tax.
