Głównymi celami mojej pracy były przekład i analiza “Bajki o własnym miejscu” autorstwa Anny Karwińskiej. Moja strategia przekładowa stawiała w centrum publiczność docelową, a także została oparta na trojako rozumianej wierności: docelowym czytelnikom, autorce i jej intencjom a także treści tekstu źródłowego. Rozważając funkcjonalne teorie przekładowe starałam się także spojrzeć na tłumaczenie dla dzieci w ogólnym sensie, jak również na własne tłumaczenie tekstu źródłowego w kontekście. Ponieważ analizuję literaturę dziecięcą w kontekście jej publiczności docelowej, jako nadrzędną cechę jej tłumaczenia traktuję funkcję jaką pełni ona wśród docelowych czytelników i w ich kulturze. Staram się także zdefiniować najważniejsze cechy literatury dla dzieci, jak również przekładu literatury tego typu, a także wskazać jak ich świadomość może wpłynąć na rozumienie roli oraz wybór strategii i technik tłumacza. Zrozumienie wspomnianego wpływu można zaobserwować w przekładzie tekstu źródłowego będącym integralną częścią pracy, a także w następującym po nim opisie tłumaczącym poszczególne decyzje tłumacza.

The main aims of the thesis are to translate and analyse “A Tale About One’s Own Place” by Anna Karwińska. The work was translated whilst paying attention to the target audience and remaining faithful to its members, while also remaining faithful to the author, her intentions and the message conveyed in the original text. While considering functionalism in translation theory, another research goal was to look at translation for children in general, as well as the source text in its English rendition – in their context. As the texts written for children were viewed as functional, the function of the translation in the target culture was presented as having prevalence over some of its different aspects (such as linguistic ones). The thesis also seeks to define the most important characteristics of Children’s literature as well as the features of its translations and show how awareness of them may influence the translator’s role is in the translation process and their strategy as well as techniques used. The reader is also provided with examples of such influence in practice in the presented translation of the source text, which is an integral part of the thesis, as well as in explanations of specific decisions made subsequently by the source text’s translator.
