Bohemianism in the 19th and 20th century based on the examples of Giacomo Puccini's opera "La Bohème" and Jonathan Larson’s musical "Rent"

Niniejsza praca koncentruje się na określeniu różnic i podobieństw pomiędzy ujęciem zjawiska bohemy artystycznej zobrazowanym przez włoskiego kompozytora Giacomo Pucciniego w operze "Cyganeria", a punktem widzenia Jonathana Larsona, autora musicalu pod tytułem "Rent". Pierwszy rozdział stanowi próbę zdefiniowania cyganerii jako fenomenu socjologicznego – rozważania te uzupełnione są historycznym zarysem XIX-wiecznych ugrupowań francuskich. W rozdziale drugim zawarty jest opis opery jako gatunku, charakterystyka jej realistycznego nurtu zwanego weryzmem oraz szczegółowa analiza opery "La Bohème". Rozważania ujęte w rozdziale trzecim skupiają się głównie wokół historii i konwencji musicalu rockowego oraz roli, jaką spełnia on w kształtowaniu społecznego światopoglądu. Przedstawiona została także różnica pomiędzy biernym podejściem twórcy operowego a zaangażowaną postawą Jonathana Larsona w "Rent".

The focus of this thesis are similarities and differences in the ways bohemians and bohemianism are portrayed in the opera "La Bohème" by the Italian composer Giacomo Puccini and Jonathan Larson’s musical "Rent". The first chapter is the attempt of defining the bohemianism as the sociological phenomenon. These reflections are completed by historical outline of the 19th century French groups. The second chapter contains the description of the opera as a genre, the characteristic of its realistic mainstream called verismo, and the detailed analysis of the opera "La Bohème". The third chapter is focused on the history and convention of the rock musical, and its role in creating the social philosophy of life. This chapter also shows the difference between passive attitude of the opera composer, and engaged approach of Jonathan Larson in "Rent".
