"Torpeda czasu" and "Dwa końce świata" written by Antoni Słonimski as science fiction novels.

Przedmiotem niniejszej pracy są powieści Antoniego Słonimskiego "Torpeda czasu" (1924) i "Dwa końce świata" (1937) badane przede wszystkim w kontekście ich związków z literaturą fantastycznonaukową.Pierwsza część pracy poświęcona jest teoretycznym zagadnieniom, związanym z literaturą fantastyczną oraz problemom badawczym dotyczącym science fiction. Na potrzeby pracy ustalone zostało rozumienie podstawowych terminów związanych z tą odmianą literatury, przedstawione zostały najpopularniejsze koncepcje dotyczące pochodzenia science fiction, a także przeanalizowane zostały wybrane definicje gatunku i ustalone jego cechy konstytutywne, co umożliwiło zbadanie przynależności i związków łączących wymienione powieści pisarza z science fiction. Druga część pracy poświęcona została analizie i interpretacji "Torpedy czasu" oraz "Dwóch końców świata" pod kątem ich problematyki oraz związków z fantastyką naukową, występujących zarówno na płaszczyźnie konstrukcyjnej, jak i tematycznej. Omówione zostały również, ze względu na funkcję, jaką pełnią w kreacji świata przedstawionego science fiction, neologizmy i neosemantyzmy pojawiające się w obu powieściach.W zakończeniu pracy podsumowana została problematyka obu utworów, cechy świadczące o ich przynależności do science fiction, a także porównane zostały problemy i motywy pojawiające się w obu powieściach. Przybliżona została również recepcja powieści przez współczesnych autorowi oraz opinie badaczy na temat utworów.

The thesis presents the analysis of two of Antoni Słonimski’s novels – “Torpeda czasu” (eng. “Time Torpedo”) and “Dwa końce świata” (eng. “Two Ends of the World”) – and shows their connection with the science fiction literature.In the first part of the thesis the author focuses on the theory of science fiction and the studies of the genre. She defines the basic terminology and presents the major theories of the origins of science fiction. Additionally, she deals with the various definitions of the genre and decides on the most typical features of this type of literature, which allows her to trace the connection between the aforementioned novels and the genre itself.The second part shows the analysis of the novels with regard to both their structure and themes, tracing their links with science fiction literature. The author studies the neologisms and coinages used in the novels and presents their function in the creation of the depicted world.The final part of the thesis shows the summary of the analysis of the themes present in the novels and the features of the texts which connect them with the genre. It presents the comparison of the motifs present in both works as well. The author mentions also the scholars’ opinions and the readers’ reception of the novels at the time of their publishing.
