The problematic aspects of multiculturalism as seen by Charles Taylor

W poniższej pracy omawiane jest zagadnienie dotyczące wielokulturowości oraz bezpośrednio z nią powiązanej kwestii równości kultur. Zasadniczą częścią jest analiza poglądów jednego z najbardziej znanych filozofów głoszących idee multikulturalistyczne, a mianowicie Kanadyjczyka Charlesa Taylora. Jest to próba zrekonstruowania jego poglądów i przybliżenia proponowanych przez niego rozwiązań. Głównym zadaniem jest próba wykazania na ile jego propozycje są możliwe do utrzymania we współczesnym, wielokulturowym świecie. Cały pierwszy rozdział jest rekonstrukcją poglądów Taylora opartą na eseju Multiculturalism and ”The Politics of Recognition”, który nigdy nie został przełożony na język polski. Odtwarzane są w nim główne założenia filozofa oraz proponowane przez niego rozwiązania prawne, definicja taylorowskiego pojęcia tożsamości i uznania, a także porównanie dwóch odmiennych polityk równego uznania – polityce równej godności i polityce różnicy, popieranej przez autora. Następnie dokonano zestawienia poglądów Taylora z innymi myślicielami: Leszkiem Kołakowskim, Andrzejem Szahajem i Allanem Bloomem. W pierwszej kolejności przytaczane są ich pomysły i poglądy na kwestię wielokulturowości, by następnie skontrastować je z omówionym w pierwszym rozdziale stanowiskiem Taylora. Cały zabieg ma na celu umożliwienie dokonania subiektywnej oceny proponowanych przez niego teorii. W rozdziale trzecim przeprowadzana jest charakterystyka kanadyjskiej prowincji Quebec, która przywołana została przez Taylora jako przykład funkcjonowania liberalnego społeczeństwa wielokulturowego. Przedstawiony zostaje krótki rys historyczny, a następnie problemy prawne wynikające z wielości kultur, z jakimi tego typu państwo boryka się od dziesiątek lat.

The following thesis discusses the problematic aspects of multiculturalism and the issue of equality of cultures which is directly affiliated with the former. The main part is to analyze the views of one of the most famous philosophers proclaiming the multicultural ideas, namely the Canadian Charles Taylor. It is an attempt to reconstruct his views and familiarize solutions proposed by him. The main task is to try to demonstrate how the proposals are tenable in today's multicultural world. The entire first chapter is a reconstruction of the views presented in Taylor's essay entitled Multiculturalism and "The Politics of Recognition", which has never been translated into Polish. It contains of the key assumptions and the legal solutions he proposed. It also includes the definition of the Taylor’s concept of identity and recognition, and the comparison of two different policies for equal recognition - policy of equal dignity and policy of difference, supported by the author. Next, there is a comparison of Taylor's views with other philosophers: Leszek Kołakowski, Andrzej Szahaj and Allan Bloom. Their ideas and views on the issue of multiculturalism are presented in the first place, then they are contrasted with the Taylor's position discussed in the first chapter. The procedure is designed to allow a subjective assessment of Taylor's theory. In the third chapter the characterization of the Canadian province of Quebec is carried out, which was cited by Taylor as an example of the functioning of a liberal multicultural society. Presented is a brief outline of the history and legal problems stemming from the multiplicity of cultures, with which this type of state has faced for decades.
