Question of conformity of astrology with Christian theology. Jean-Baptiste Morin de Villefranche and his "Astrologia Gallica"

Cel pracy jest dwojaki. Pierwszy to prześledzenie w oparciu o tekst źródłowy, jakie uzasadnienia autor AG daje astrologicznemu systemowi, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem tych punktów, gdzie odwołuje się do Boga lub Pisma św. Drugi to ukazanie, w jaki sposób astrolog próbuje zażegnać szereg konfliktów, jakie rodzą się między chrześcijańską teologią a sztuką czytania z gwiazd. W pierwszym rozdziale zostanie przedstawiona biografia Morina – z akcentem na jego działalność naukową, poruszona będzie również kwestia religii wyznawanej przez astrologa, a także scharakteryzuje się jego dzieło wraz z omówieniem dotychczasowych wydań.W drugim rozdziale znajdzie się ujęcie astrologii jako nauki naturalnej oraz – co niezwykle oryginalne – jako nauki formalnej, jednakże trzon stanowić będzie zaprezentowanie przyrodniczych racji stojących za poszczególnymi składnikami astrologicznego języka, przeplatanych słowami z Pisma, a w miejscu, gdzie fundament w postaci natury nie wystarczy, ujawni się Bóg jako gwarant prawdziwości astrologicznej doktryny.W trzecim rozdziale zostanie pokazany dystans Morinusa od nauk teologicznych, następnie pomysły pogodzenia z astrologią takich chrześcijańskich koncepcji jak wolna wola, łaska czy grzech pierworodny, a całość tekstu zwieńczy idea astrologii jako dziedziny, która – mając za swój przedmiot niebo oraz planety – najpełniej obrazuje działanie Boga w świecie.

Purpose of this work is twofold. The first is to trace on the basis of the source text what justification the author of „Astrologia Gallica” gives for the astrological system, with particular emphasis on those points where he refers to God or the Bible. The second is to show how the astrologer is trying to stave off a number of conflicts that arise between Christian theology and the art of reading the stars.In the first chapter the biography of Morin will be presented with a focus on his scientific activity, the issue of religion professed by the astrologer will also be dealt, and his work will be characterized along with a discussion of hitherto existing editions as well.In the second chapter astrology will be formulated as a natural science and – very original – as a formal science, however the core will be a presentation of natural reasons behind the individual components of the astrological language, interspersed with the words of Scripture, and in the place where the foundation in the form of nature is not enough, God reveals himself as the guarantor of the truthfulness of the astrological doctrine.In the third chapter the distance Morinus keeps from theological sciences will be showed, then ideas of reconciliation of Christian concepts such as free will, grace or the original sin with astrology, and the whole text will be crowned with an idea of astrology as the domain, which – having the sky and planets for its subject – most fully depicts the God's action in the world.
