Interakcje typu drapieżnik-ofiara odgrywają podstawowa rolę w kształtowaniu struktury i funkcji ekosystemów. W szerokim zakresie zmieniają swoje rozmiary i potrafią dostosowywać je do rodzaju i wielkości cząstek pokarmowych.
Interaction type of predator-prey play a fundamental role in shaping the structure of and ecosystem services. Therefore, understanding the related mechanisms is important for the protection of the environment. Protozoa are good models for research in this area. Some predators, such as ciliates Stylonychia mytilus, are known for their morphological plasticity. The wide range of changes in size and are able to adapt them to the type and size of food particles. In the presence of high casualties are larger body, allowing better hunt.Ciliates of the genus Euplotes use the morphological defense mechanism induced by predators. It depends on the morphological transformation, which makes it difficult to swallow the victim by a predator. It seems that the victim adjusts the scope of his defense (including the costs incurred) to the actual risks associated with the properties of a predator and its abundance. The aim of this study was to verify the above hypothesis by confronting the victim (Euplotes daidaleos) with two forms of predator (Stylonychia mytilus): a form of a "typical" and the "giant". Has been found that in the presence of both forms of the predator Euplotes reached the same width. Contrary to expectations, the mortality rate in the presence of the victims 'giants' turned out to be even slightly lower than in the presence of typical forms. The probable explanation is very little difference in size between the two forms of the predator, which were used in the experiment.
