Empathy and assertiveness in the context of the nursing profession

Zasadniczym celem pracy było wykazanie znaczenia empatii i asertywności w pracy pielęgniarek jak również ocena związku tych umiejętności ze specyfiką wykonywanej przez nie pracy. Dodatkowym celem była ocena związku empatii z asertywnością, z uwzględnieniem złożoności obu tych umiejętności interpersonalnych. W badaniu wzięło udział 120 pielęgniarek: 60 pracujących na oddziale psychiatrycznym i 60 pracujących na oddziałach innych niż psychiatryczny. Poziom empatii zmierzono Indeksem Reaktywności Emocjonalnej (IRI) M. Davisa, natomiast poziom asertywności został zmierzony Mapą Asertywności M. Król – Fijewskiej. Wyniki badań potwierdziły brak pozytywnej zależności pomiędzy asertywnością a empatią emocjonalną oraz zależność pomiędzy wiekiem osób badanych a przyjmowaniem cudzej perspektywy (czynnik empatii poznawczej). Nie wykazano związku asertywności z empatią poznawczą ani różnic w poziomie empatii i asertywności związanych ze specyfiką oddziału na którym pracowały pielęgniarki.

The main purpose of this thesis was to show how empathy and assertiveness are important in nurses’ work field. It also tries to evaluate the relation between those two characteristics in the nurses’ line of work. An additional purpose of the text was to describe the association between empathy and assertiveness taking into consideration complexity of these two interpersonal skills. 120 nurses took part in this research. Among them 60 worked in psychiatric wards and 60 worked in other wards. Empathy level was measured with Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) created by M. Davis and level of assertiveness was measured with M. Król-Fijałkowska’s Assertiveness Map. The results of the research confirmed that there is no positive correlation between assertiveness and emotional empathy. Lack of relationship between the age of the study participants and perspective taking, which is one of the factors of cognitive empathy was also confirmed in the results. The research showed neither association between assertiveness and cognitive empathy nor differences in levels of empathy and assertiveness resulted from the places where nurses work (psychiatric or other wards).
