The echoes of the invention of the Amazon region based on the novels of Ferreira de Castro A selva and Jose Eustacio Rivera La Voragine.

Niniejsza praca ma na celu zanalizowanie wkładu powieści „Wir" Jose Eustacio Rivery i „A selva" Ferreira de Castro w kreowanie mitu Amazonii, czyli tworzenie dyskursu o selwie w okresie boomu kauczukowego. Kluczowym punktem pracy jest przedstawienie motywów, które konstytuują wiedzę powszechną na temat Amazonii. Analiza zostanie przeprowadzona w oparciu o wcześniejsze dzieła: relacje pierwszych odkrywców, podróżników i naturalistów z uwzględnieniem pojęcia dyskursu Foucaulta. W pierwszym rozdziale zostaną omówione zagadnienia związane z kolonizacją i kreowaniem mitu o Amazonii przez pierwszych podróżników, naukowców i naturalistów, powody tworzenia wizerunku mitycznej Amazonii, pojęcie boomu kauczukowego i powieści o selwie, „Orientalizm" Edwarda Saida, który może posłużyć jako punkt odniesienia do wyjaśnienia, jak analizować dyskurs. W drugim rozdziale rozpatrywane są elementy dyskursu o selwie obecne w „Wirze" José Eustacio Rivery. Trzeci rozdział jest poświęcony analizie elementów dyskursu o Amazonii w „A selva" Ferreiry de Castro.

This study aims to analyze the contribution of the novels La Voragine of Jose Eustacio Rivera and A selva of Ferreira de Castro to the invention of the Amazon region, namely, the creation of a discourse about the Amazon jungle concerning the rubber boom. The focus of this paper is to outline and highlight several motives that created the popular knowledge about the Amazon region. Therefore, the analysis bears in mind previous creations about this region: the writings of the first discoverers, travelers and naturalists. For this purpose Foucault’s concept of discourse serves as a theoretical tool. In the first chapter we present aspects related to the colonization and the "invention" of the Amazon by early travelers, scientists and naturalists, the reasons for creating the image of the "wonderful Amazon" or "place out of reality". We explain the meaning of the rubber boom and the novel of the jungle. Edward Said’s Orientalism serves as a reference to explain how discourses are formed. In the second chapter we discuss the elements of the discourse about the Amazon jungle in Jose Eustacio Rivera’s La voragine. The third chapter analyses the discourse about the Amazon region in Ferreira de Castro’s A selva.

Na presente dissertação pretende-se analisar a contribuição dos romances La voragine de José Eustacio Rivera e A selva de Ferreira de Castro na invenção de Amazônia, isto é, a criação do discurso sobre a selva que concerne o ciclo da borracha. O objetivo do nosso trabalho é traçar e evidenciar vários motivos que constituem a criação do saber comum sobre a Amazônia. Portanto, a análise é realizada tendo em mente criações prévias: relatos dos primeiros descobridores, viajantes e naturalistas tendo em conta o conceito de discurso de Foucault. No primeiro capítulo apresenta-se aspetos ligados à colonização e a “invenção” da Amazônia pelos primeiros viajantes, cientistas e naturalistas, as razões para criar a imagem da“Amazônia maravilhosa” ou lugar “fora da realidade” e explica-se o que é o ciclo da borracha e o romance da selva. O livro Orientalismo de Edward Said serve como referência para explicar como se formam os discursos. No segundo capítulo discute-se os elementos do discurso sobre a selva existentes em La voragine de José Eustacio Rivera e analiza-se o romance. No terceiro capítulo expõem-se os elementos do discurso sobre a Amazônia em A selva de Ferreira de Castro comparando-os com o romance de Rivera.
