Funeral practices in the Middle Palaeolithic

Praca zawiera opis i analizę środkowo paleolitycznych pochówków Homo sapiens i Homo neanderthalensis ze stanowisk w Europie, Azji (Krym, Uzbekistan), Bliskiego Wschodu i Egiptu. Pochówki te są tu traktowane jako intencjonalne inhumacje. Dokonano analiza uwzględnia: gatunek pochowanego hominida, jego płeć, wiek, sposób ułożenia szczątków, orientację, rodzaj obiektu i ewentualne wyposażenie grobowe. Główne wnioski prezentują się następująco. Mężczyźni byli chowani znacznie częściej niż kobiety u obu gatunków hominidów. Występuje duża frakcja pochówków dziecięcych u Homo neanderthalensis. Ciała były zwykle chowane w pozycji zgiętej na prawym lub lewym boku oraz ułożone w osi wschód-zachód, ale brak tu wyraźnych preferencji. Obiekty grobowe stanowiły jamy (częstsze), kopce (rzadsze) lub ich kombinacja. Wyposażenie grobowe występowało w ponad połowie przypadków, zazwyczaj były to artefakty wykonane z kamienia lub kości zwierząt. W kilku przypadkach stwierdzono obecność sproszkowanej ochry. Ze względu na trudno dostępne i niekompletne informacje nie dokonano analizy statystycznej zebranych danych.

The paper contains a description and analysis of the Middle Palaeolithic burials of Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis from archeological sites in Europe, Asia (Crimea, Uzbekistan), Middle East and Egypt. That burials are treated as intentional inhumations. The analysis includes species of buried hominid, sex, age, body arrangement, orientation, type of facility and any grove goods. The main conclusions are as follows. The men were buried more often than women in both of the species. There is high fraction of infant burials in Homo neanderthalensis inhumations. The bodies were usually buried in a flexed position on the right or left side and arranged in a east-west axis, but there was no clear preference. The mortuary structures were pits (more often), mounds (rare), or a combination of both of them. The groove goods was found in more than half cases, they were usually stone artifacts and animal bones. In some cases was detected presence of powdered ocher. Because of the inaccessible or incomplete information, the statistical analysis of the collected data were not made.
