Representations of Apolloand Artemis in Classical period

W sztuce greckiej okresu klasycznego istnieje bardzo wiele przedstawień Apolla i Artemidy. Wizerunki obu tych bóstw szczególnie popularne były w rzeźbie i malarstwie ceramicznym. Jako sztandarowe przykłady rzeźby można wymienić Apolla Belwederskiego i Artemidę Wersalską, rzymskie kopie dzieł Leocharesa, czy Apolla Sauroktonos Praksytelesa, wielkiego rzeźbiarza IV w. p.n.e. Nie można jednak zapominać o przykładach statui mniej znanych. Wizerunki Apolla w rzeźbie reprezentują również takie kopie, jak Apollo z Tybru, Mantui, Kassel czy Choiseul-Gouffier. Są to wspaniałe przykłady kopii rzeźb z okresu klasycznego, mimo iż mniej znane, lecz niemniej imponujące. Przedstawień Artemidy w rzeźbie także mamy wiele. Podobnie, i w tym przypadku są rzeźby bardziej i mniej znane. Do znanych większej grupie odbiorców można zaliczyć Artemidę z Drezna czy z Gabii. Wśród posągów mniej znanych znalazły się m.in Artemida z Mityleny, Palazzo Colonna czy Kition-Larnaka. W malarstwie wazowym odnajdujemy przedstawienia scen mitologicznych z udziałem Apolla i Artemidy, jak np. śmierć Niobidów, Tityosa czy Aktajona. Boskie dzieci Leto wyobrażano także na reliefach czy monetach. Są to zabytki niezwykle ciekawe i zarazem uzupełniające ikonografię omawianych bóstw. Przedstawienia bóstw w reliefie to m.in fryz zdobiący Partenon, fryz dekorujący tron Zeusa w Olimpii czy liczne reliefy przedstawiające śmierć Aktajona. Nie można też zapominać o świątyniach kultu obu bóstw. W osobnym rozdziale omówiono wyobrażenia Leto, matki Apolla i Artemidy.

In the Classical period of Greek art, there are many representations of Apollo and Artemis. Images of both these deities were particularly popular in sculpture and vase-painting. The flagship examples include sculptures of Apollo Belvedere and Artemis (Diana) from Versailles, Roman copies of Leochares, and the Apollo Sauroktonos of Praxiteles, the great sculptor fourth century BC. We can not forget about the lesser-known examples. Images of Apollo in sculpture are also represented by copies such as Apollo Tiber, Mantua, Kassel or Choiseul-Gouffier. These are wonderful examples of copies of Classical period originals , though less well known, but nonetheless impressive. The Artemis representations in sculpture are also numerous. Similarly, in this case, there are sculptures more and less known. The well-known include i.e. Artemis of Dresden and the Gabii Artemis. Among the lesser-known statues we can cite Artemis of Mytilene, Palazzo Colonna or Kition-Larnaca.On vase-painting we can also find many mythological scenes involving Apollo and Artemis, such as the killing children of Niobe, of Tityos or Actaeon. The divine children of Leto have also been represented on reliefs and coins. These are extremely interesting monuments and at the same time enlarging the iconography of these deities. In this group the frieze adorning the Parthenon was discussed and the decoratiion of the throne of Zeus at Olympia and numerous reliefs with death of Actaeon. We can not forget about the temples of worship of both gods. In the separate section, the images of Leto, the mother of Apollo and Artemis have been discussed too.
