Two portraits of Michelangelo: Vasari’s The Lives of the Artists and Stone’s The Agony and the Ecstasy

Niniejsza praca jest poświęcona porównaniu dwóch biografii Michała Anioła, które dzieli ponad czterysta lat. Pierwsza z nich autorstwa Giorgio Vasariego jest zawarta w słynnych Żywotach najsławniejszych malarzy, rzeźbiarzy i architektów i stanowi świadectwo autora na temat czasów mu współczesnych. Druga zaś napisana przez Irvinga Stone'a pod tytułem Udręka i ekstaza, ujmuje problem z odległej perspektywy, uwzględniając rozwój badań i najnowsze informacje w zakresie historii sztuki. W mojej pracy zawieram zestawienie najważniejszych kwestii, które wyłaniają się podczas interpretacji obu portretów Buonarrotiego oraz staram się rozstrzygnąć, czy występujące pomiędzy nimi różnice wynikają z innego stanu wiedzy autorów, czy z przyjęcia przez nich odmiennych założeń. Przedstawiając dwa profile artysty, staram się ponadto zaprezentować, jak przez wieki zmieniało się postrzeganie jednostki wybitnej i jej geniuszu. W centrum mojego zainteresowania leżą więc nie dzieje życia renesansowego mistrza, lecz mechanizmy, które wpływają na tworzenie biografii artystów.

This work is devoted to the comparison of two biographies of Michelangelo that were written by Giorgio Vasari and Irving Stone over a span of 400 years. Contained in Vasari’s Lives of the Most Excellent Italian Painters, Sculptors, and Architects, from Cimabue to Our Times, the biography of Buonarroti offers the author’s account of the times contemporary to him. The Agony and the Ecstasy written by Irving Stone views the issue from a different standpoint, namely it considers the recent findings in the scope of the history of art. In my work I explore the key issues that arise while interpreting the two portraits of Michelangelo. Moreover, I make an attempt to determine whether the contrast between the two representations stems from the authors’ different states of knowledge or the various assumptions they adopt. What is more, I try to present how the perception of genius and eminence has changed throughout centuries. Thus, it is not the life of the painter, but the mechanisms that affect the process of creating biographies of artists that lie at the centre of my interest.
