Polish Blogosphere as a Source of Information about the Quality of Cancer Care. Analysis of Contents of Patients' Blogs from Year 2010 to 2012.

Wprowadzenie: Rosnąca popularność Internetu spowodowała, że coraz więcej osób decyduje się na prowadzenie w sieci swojego dziennika, popularnie określanego blogiem. Wśród użytkowników liczną grupę stanowią osoby z chorobą nowotworową. Cel pracy: Praca ma na celu analizę przydatności informacji zawartych w blogach pacjentów zmagających się z chorobą nowotworową do oceny jakości opieki onkologicznej w Polsce.Materiał i metoda: Przedmiotem analizy były treści zamieszczone na łamach dzienników internetowych prowadzonych przez pacjentów w Polsce. Wybór blogów przeprowadzono metodą kuli śnieżnej (snowball sampling) Analiza obejmowała identyfikację komentarzy dotyczących: dostępności leczenia (czas oczekiwania na wizytę/zabieg/kontrolę), stosunku do płatnika (dostępność do świadczeń) oraz pracy personelu medycznego (profesjonalizm, zaangażowanie w przebieg leczenia, zachowanie wobec pacjenta).Wyniki: W wyniku przeszukania polskiej blogosfery zidentyfikowano 26 dzienników prowadzonych przez osoby cierpiące na chorobę nowotworową. Na podstawie wstępnej oceny treści wyodrębniono grupę 16 blogów, które zostały poddane szczegółowej analizie. W 16 z nich znaleziono treści zawierające opinie na temat pracy lekarzy (57 postów); pozytywne uwagi stanowiły 68,4% (39 postów), negatywne 19,3% (11 postów), a neutralne 12,3%. Komentarze dotyczące Narodowego Funduszu Zdrowia znaleziono w 5 blogach – wszystkie zawierały negatywne opinie. Główne obszary krytyki dotyczyły dostępności wolnych terminów na kontrakt z NFZ-tem oraz braku finansowania niektórych leków. Wśród 8 dzienników, które zawierały opinie na temat pracy pielęgniarek, znaleziono łącznie 18 postów; pozytywne uwagi stanowiły 72% (13 postów), negatywne – 28% (5 postów). Wnioski: Polska blogosfera może być istotnym źródłem informacji na temat jakości świadczonych usług medycznych. Pozorna anonimowość pacjentów prowadzących blogi skłania do wyrażania szczerych opinii na temat jakości oferowanej opieki. Zamieszczane wpisy ukazują stosunek instytucji oferujących opiekę medyczną do osoby z nowotworem. W analizowanych blogach dominuje negatywny obraz NFZ-tu. Większość blogerów pozytywnie ocenia opiekę lekarzy i pielęgniarek.

Introduction: Growing popularity of the internet caused increase in number of people writing their diary online called blog. There is a big group of people with cancer among the bloggers.Aim of the study: The study's aim is to analyse usefulness of information found in cancer patients' blogs to evaluate the quality of cancer care in Poland.Materials and method: The object of analysis was the content of blogs led by patients in Poland. The selection of those blogs was made by the snowball sampling. The analysis covered identification of comments on: an access to treatment (waiting time for appointment/procedure/control), attitude towards payer (access to services) and work of medical staff (professionality level, commitment to course of treatment, attitude towards patient). Results: As a result of searching through the polish blogosphere there was identified 26 blogs led by cancer patients. On the grounds of pre-evaluation of contents, there was distinct the group of 16 blogs which were investigated in-depth. In 16 of them there were found contents about the work of doctors (57 posts); positive comments made up 68.4% (39 posts), negative comments 19.3% (11 posts) and neutral comments 12.3%. Comments on Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia were found in 5 blogs' contents. All of the comments on the NFZ had negative overtone. The main area of criticism affected the access to appointments on contract with the NFZ and lack of funding some of the medicines. Among 8 blogs having opinion about the work of nurses there were found 18 posts; positive comments made up 72% (13 posts) but on the other side negative comments made up 28% (5 posts).Conclusions: Polish blogosphere might be essential source of information about the quality of provided medical services. The apparent anonymity of the patients writing their blogs encourages them to express more candid opinions about the quality of medical services. Published posts show the attitude of institutions offering the medical care towards the cancer patients. In analysed blogs' content predominates negative image of the NFZ. Most of the opinions contained in blog posts concerning doctors and nurses evaluates their services positively.
