Wpływ elementów kulturowych na francuskie i polskie tłumaczenie Pożegnania z Afryką Karen Blixen

Niniejsza praca jest poświęcona analizie wpływu elementów kulturowych na tłumaczenie. Przykłady ilustrujące to zjawisko pochodzą z Pożegnania z Afryką Karen Blixen. Celem tej pracy jest pokazanie, że elementy kulturowe i ich tłumaczenie mają ogromny wpływ na tekst jako całość i jego odbiór. W zależności od podejścia, tekst może być przykładem użycia domestykacji lub egzotyzacji. Praca składa sie z czterech rozdziałów, każdy z nich rozpoczyna ogólne wprowadzenie do teorii dotyczącej danego zjawiska, która potem jest opisywana szczegółowo. Pierwszy rozdział opisuje cechy charakterystyczne literatury kolonialnej posługując sie teoriami Loomby. Saida, Österhammela, Drakakis-Smitha i Tymoczko. Literatura kolonialna jest opisana z angielskiego i francuskiego punktu widzenia. Cześć dotycząca kultury bazuje na teoriach Katana, Newmarka, Wierzbickiej, Toropa i Snell-Hornby oraz teoriach Halla i Katana opisujących elementy kulturowe. Klasyfikacja elementów kulturowych stworzona przez Newmarka i Ke Pinga wraz z teoriami Newmarka, Venutiego, Aixeli i Hervey’a i Higginsa opisującymi podejście do tłumaczenia elementów kulturowych tworzy metodologię wykorzystaną w pracy. Ostatni rozdział jest poświęcony analizie i opisowi elementów kulturowych przy użyciu teorii Newmarka, Ke Pinga i Hervey’a i Higginsa. Analizowane przykłady elementów kulturowych i ich francuskich i polskich tłumaczeń pokazują ich wpływ na tekst jako całość oraz na jego tłumaczenie.

The thesis is devoted to the analysis of the impact of cultural elements on translation. The examples illustrating translation of cultural elements are excerpted from Karen Blixen’s Out of Africa. The aim of this thesis is to show that cultural elements and their translation make an enormous impact on the whole text and its reception. Depending on the approach, through the translation of cultural elements, the text may be an example of domestication or foreignization strategy. The thesis is divided into four chapters. Every chapter begins with the most general theory of a given phenomenon and it is followed by a more detailed description. The first chapter presents the characteristics of colonial literature based on Loomba, Said, Österhammel, Drakakis-Smith and Tymoczko theories. The notion of colonial novel is described from both the English and French literary tradition viewpoint. The second chapter focuses on the notion of culture and cultural elements. The description of the concept of culture is based on Katan, Newmark, Wierzbicka, Torop and Snell-Hornby theories, which is then followed by the analysis of cultural elements theory based on Hall and Katan’s approaches. Classifications of cultural elements presented by Newmark and Ke Ping in this chapter are used in chapter four of the thesis and it is a part of methodology used in the thesis. The other part of methodology is based on Newmark, Venuti, Aixela and Hervey and Higgins approach to translation of cultural elements. The last chapter is devoted to the description and analysis of cultural elements classified according to Newmark and Ke Ping’s theories and with the use of Hervey and Higgins methodology. The analysed examples of cultural elements and their French and Polish translations show the influence on the texts and their impact on translation.
