Technology versus culture – Is technology a creative or destructive power with respect to human culture?

Praca opiera się na zagadnieniu, czy technika jest siłą twórczą czy niszczącą kulturę ludzką. Analiza przeprowadzona jest na podstawie książki Neil Postman'a “Technopol – triumf techniki nad kulturą”, przedstawiając jego poglądy i wykazując jego błędy. Jest to próba udowodnienia, że to nie technika jest czynnikiem niszczącym kulturę, ale sam człowiek. Technopol jest według Postman'a chorobą XXI wieku, która objawia się w przekonaniu ludzkim, że najwyższą wartością człowieka jest wydajność pracy. Błędy które Postman popełnia zaczynają się już od samej definicji kultury. Eliminacja techniki z definicji kultury, prowadzi go do błędnych wniosków, że technika niszczy kulturę. Zapomina on, że technika, jest integralnym i nierozłączną częścią kultury. Drugim błędem Postman'a jest sprowadzanie terminu kultury do wartości i ideologii religijnych, które dla niego stanowią same w sobie kulturę. Kolejnym błędem jest zarzut, że człowiek personifikuje technikę i tym samym przypisuję technice, jak np. komputerze, wolną wole. Postman jednak sam personifikuje technikę mówiąc, że ona atakuje kulturę i że człowiek traci panowanie nad nią, jak nad zwierzęciem wypuszczonym z klatki.Wykazuje w mojej pracy, że to nie technika jest przyczyną zaniku kultury, ale sam człowiek i że jest to tworzenie nowej kultury. Problemy są natury światopoglądu i natury moralnej w starciu starej kultury z nową.

This work is based on the main issue, whether the technology is a creative power or destroying the human culture. The analysis is conducted based on the book from Neil Postman “Technopoly – the surrender of culture to technology”, showing his views and demonstrating his mistakes. It is the attempt to prove that it is not the technology factor, which is destroying the culture, but the human it self. Technopoly is according to Postman, the illness of the 21st century, which demonstrates us, that the human work output is a maximum value of the human being. Mistakes which Postman is committing, are beginning already from very definition of the culture. Elimination of the technology by definition cultures, is leading him to false conclusions, that technology is destroying the culture. He forgets, that the technology is an integral and inseparable part of the culture. The second mistake of Postman is, his understanding of the definition of culture, as the only value and the religious ideology, which are for him the culture it self. The next mistake is the charge, that the man is personifying the technology and in the same process he is assigning to the technology, like computer, free will. However Postman is doing the same, and he is personifying the technology, saying that technology is attacking the culture and that the human is loosing the control, like an animal which we let out of the cage.I am showing in my work, that it is not the technology causing the disappearance of the culture, but the human self and it is the creating of a new culture. The problems are of the world view nature and the moral nature in the clash of the old culture with the new culture.
