CULTURE VISION OF ANCIENT GREECE ACCORDING TO HERODOTUS

Celem pracy było uporządkowanie wszystkich wypowiedzi Herodota związanych z kulturą starożytnej Grecji połączone z pytaniem o jego ocenę tej kultury. Należy pamiętać, że Herodot miał inny cel swojego dzieła. Zakładał również, że odbiorcą będzie Grek, czyli odwoływał się do powszechnej wiadomości o kulturze greckiej. Z tej przyczyny nie znajdziemy w Dziejach dużo informacji, aby odtworzyć całość bogatej kultury starożytnej Grecji. Odnotowałam zatem obraz kultury Hellenów tak jak on ją widział. Co uznawał za ważne jej elementy, a czym różniła się od kultury barbarzyńców. Praca składa się z sześciu rozdziałów. Cztery z nich są poświęcone osobnym elementom kultury starożytnej Grecji, a mianowicie: polityka, religia, zwyczaje, igrzyska. Każdy z tych elementów opisałam zaznaczając opinię Herodota na jej temat. W rozdziale „Kultura barbarzyńska a kultura grecka oczami Herodota” zostały przestawione spostrzeżenia historyka na temat różnic kulturowych obu narodów. Dostrzega, że różnica w światopoglądzie jest przyczyną dzielącą barbarzyńców i Hellenów. W siódmym rozdziale opisałam opinie Herodota oraz barbarzyńców o Grekach. Ogólna wizja oraz ocena starożytnej kultury greckiej według Herodota została umieszczona w zakończeniu. Herodot obiektywnie podchodził do pisania dzieła. Wywyższał kulturę i naród grecki, ale nie oszczędzał również zasłużonych pochwał barbarzyńcom.

The aim of this study was to sort out all statements of Herodotus related to the ancient Greek culture, connected to the question of his assessment of this culture. Please note that Herodotus had another purpose of his work. He also assumed that the recipient will be a Greek that is why he referred to the knowledge of Greek culture. For this reason, we will not find a lot of information in History to reconstruct all the culture wealth of ancient Greece. I noted the image of Hellenic culture as he had seen it. What he recognized as its important components, and how it differs from the barbarians culture. The work consists of six chapters. Four of them are dedicated to the separate elements of the culture of ancient Greece, namely: politics, religion, customs and the Olympics. Each of these elements I wrote about, emphasizing the opinion of Herodotus about it. In the chapter "Barbaric culture and Greek culture in the eyes of Herodotus," were presented historian observations on cultural differences between the two nations. He sees that the difference in outlook on the world is the cause dividing the barbarians and the Hellenes. In the seventh chapter I wrote about the opinions of Herodotus and the barbarians about the Greeks. The general vision and evaluation of ancient Greek culture, according to Herodotus, was included in the conclusion. Herodotus objectively approached the writing of his work. He exalted the Greek culture and nation, but did not spare also the deserving praise of the barbarians.
