Technologies of access and use of electronic books and journals in Poland in 2007-2011

Niniejsza praca magisterska opisuje sytuację na rynku elektronicznych publikacji w Polsce w latach 2007–2011 ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem aspektów technicznych związanych z dostępnością i odbiorem e-publikacji. Przedstawione zostały podstawowe pojęcia związane z elektronicznymi publikacjami, jak również własna definicja e-publikacji, historia powstania i rozwoju e-publikacji na świecie, opis technologii i standardów związanych z publikacjami elektronicznymi oraz zarys obecnego stanu polskiego i światowego rynku e-publikacji. Praca zawiera opis wyników własnych badań, przeprowadzonych na przełomie 2011 i 2012 roku w formie ankiety elektronicznej na grupie 766 mieszkańców Polski. Celem badań było ustalenie, z jakich technologii związanych z odbiorem e-publikacji korzystają Polacy oraz które aspekty technologiczne są w tym wypadku dla nich najważniejsze. Wyniki badań mogą być przydatne dla badań dotyczących historii rynku elektronicznych publikacji w Polsce i Europie, mogą również stanowić pomoc w planowaniu kolejnych badań rynku.

The aim of this paper is to discuss technical aspects of adaptation of elec-tronic books and electronic journals in Poland in the period 2007–2011. Drawing on Polish and English literature, basic issues connected with electronic publications are presented. The author discusses difficulties in defining e-publications and presents her own definition of e-books. The influence of new technologies on the book market and publishing process is depicted. The most important technical matters, such as standards, data formats, electronic paper technology, devices and software are described. The work also discusses the problems of technical means of protection of e-publications files and the consumers’ opinion on copyright issues. The aspects of e-publications market in Poland are presented. The paper includes a description of the results of a study carried out in the turn of 2011–2012 in form of an electronic survey on the group of 766 Polish citizens. The purpose of the survey was to determine which technologies are used by Polish consumers and which technological as-pects are most important to Polish users. The study also aimed to deter-mine the impact of the following factors – the economic situation of users, the purposes for which they use e-publications, the place of use of electronic publications, the number of purchases of printed books and printed journals, and also age, sex, education, residence place and occupation of consumers – on the use of new technologies related to reading electronic publications. The study also includes the participation of people who do not use electronic publications. This dissertation contributes to research in e-publications market in Poland and in Europe.
