Anhelli by Juliusz Słowacki – the study of the protagonist.

W mojej pracy licencjackiej podejmuję próbę stworzenia charakterystyki tytułowego bohatera poematu Juliusza Słowackiego, jego cech zewnętrznych i psychiki. Analizuję opis wędrówki młodzieńca z jego przewodnikiem, Szamanem, która stanowi symboliczny obraz piekła polskich zesłańców po klęsce powstania listopadowego. Pokazuję też, że sposób ukazania syberyjskiego krajobrazu, nawiązania do Biblii, a także do twórczości innych autorów wpływają na odbiór postaci Anhellego. Słowacki nie daje czytelnikowi jednoznacznej odpowiedzi na pytanie o to, czy ofiara i cierpienia Anhellego dadzą Polsce odkupienie i jakie będą dalsze losy przyszłych pokoleń. Poeta tworzy jednak koncepcję cierpienia, w której Anhelli odegra kluczową rolę. Poemat Słowackiego to także odpowiedź na obraz polskiej emigracji z Ksiąg narodu polskiego i pielgrzymstwa polskiego Mickiewicza. Spór jaki się wtedy utworzył między poetami także będzie tematem jednego z końcowych rozdziałów tej pracy.

In my thesis I’m trying to create characteristics of the protagonist, who appears in Juliusz Słowacki’s poem; his external features as well as psyche. I’m analyzing the description of the journey taken by the young boy and his guide – Shaman. The journey is a symbolic image of hell which is being experienced by the Polish exiles after the fall of the November Uprising. I’m showing that the way of displaying Siberian landscape, reference to the Bible and to the writings of other authors affect the perception of Anhelli. Słowacki doesn’t give the reader straight answer to the question if the sacrifice and suffering that Ahelli experiences will give Poland the redemption and what the fate of the next generation will look like. The poet creates the concept of suffering, in which Anhelli will play the leading role. Słowacki’s poem is also a response to the image of the Polish emigration in the context of Adam Mickiewcz Books of the Polish Nation and Its Pilgrimage. The conflict between both poets will also be mentioned in one of the last chapters of my thesis.
