The city policy towards the public space in Kraków. The case of transformation of the city center since 2003.

Centrum Krakowa stanowi bez wątpienia jego najważniejszy element z uwagi na mnogość pełnionych przez siebie funkcji. Rynek Główny jest jednym z najbardziej dynamicznych obszarów, a jednocześnie terenem uznawanym za idealną przestrzeń służącą ludziom. Niemiej jednak dzisiaj nawet w jego kontekście możemy mówić o kryzysie przestrzeni publicznej. Znaczenie Starego Miasta jest często niedoceniane, a interesy ekonomiczne biorą górę nad dobrami niematerialnymi. W związku z tym w swojej pracy starałam się zdiagnozować największe problemy śródmieścia Krakowa jako przestrzeni wspólnej wszystkich obywateli oraz przedstawić, wraz z rzetelną oceną, pomysły władz miasta na ich rozwiązanie.

The center of Kraków fulfills many roles which are crucial for existence of the city . The Main Square is one of the most dynamic spaces and at the same time it is the area, which is regarded as an ideal space which serves people. Nevertheless even in this context we can talk about crisis of the public space. Its significance is very often underestimated and the economic motives are more important than unseen values. In connection with it in my MA thesis I was trying to diagnose the biggest problems of the city center in Kraków as a common space for all citizens and present, with a thorough assessment, city council’s ideas for solving them.
