Zmiany klimatyczne zwiększyły możliwości wydobywania surowców energetycznych w Arktyce. Regionem tym zainteresowanych jest obecnie coraz więcej państw, chcących wpływać na sytuację na Dalekiej Północy. Państwem, które szczególnie zaniepokojone jest zaistniałym stanem rzeczy w północnej części swego terytorium jest Kanada, która podejmuje liczne działania mające na celu umocnienie swej suwerenności i bezpieczeństwa w Arktyce. Moja praca podzielona została na trzy główne części. Rozdział pierwszy przybliża wizerunek regionu arktycznego, opisuje jego warunki klimatyczne, ludność oraz zasoby. Następnie przedstawiony zostaje status prawny Arktyki oraz wód ją otaczających. Ostatnim elementem tej części pracy jest charakterystyka roszczeń terytorialnych poszczególnych państw arktycznych względem tego regionu oraz ewentualny ich wpływ na Kanadę. Rozdział drugi stanowi szczegółowy opis działań prowadzonych przez państwo kanadyjskie w arktycznej części swego terytorium. Opisana zostaje historia powstania oraz funkcjonowanie DEW Line, NORAD, Canadian Coast Guard, Canadian Rangers, baz wojskowo-szkoleniowych rozlokowanych na Dalekiej Północy oraz manewrów o nazwie Operation Nanook. Rozdział trzeci to z kolei ukazanie Kanady jako członka międzynarodowych organizacji i inicjatyw na rzecz Arktyki, takich jak Rada Arktyczna i Międzynarodowy Rok Polarny. Zarysowane zostają również ogólne założenia polityki arktycznej Unii Europejskiej, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem podejścia tej organizacji do relacji z państwem kanadyjskim.

Climate change has increased the possibility of extraction of energy resources in the Arctic. Nowadays, a lot of countries are interested in this region and want to influence the situation in the Far North. The country, which is particularly concerned about the situation in the northern part of its territory is Canada, which takes a number of steps to strengthen its sovereignty and security in the Arctic. My thesis work is divided into three main sections. The first chapter introduces the image of the Arctic region, describes its climate, population and resources. Then I describe the legal status of the Arctic and the waters surrounding it. The final element of this part of the study is to characterize national territorial claims in the Arctic and their potential impact on Canada. The second chapter provides a detailed description of the activities carried out by Canadians in the Arctic part of its territory. I presented the history of the creation and functioning of the DEW Line, NORAD, Canadian Coast Guard, Canadian Rangers, military and training bases located in the Far North and one of the most famous sovereignty operations in Canada called Operation Nanook. The last chapter shows Canada as a member of international organizations and initiatives for the Arctic, such as the Arctic Council and the International Polar Year. Besides, I outlined the general assumptions of the EU Arctic policy, with particular emphasis on the organization's approach to relations with Canada.
