Development of the idea of tolerance and religious freedom in the writings of the Polish Brethren (XVI - XVII century)

Tematem pracy jest ukazanie źródeł i procesu kształtowania się idei tolerancji w myśli arian polskich oraz jej rozwoju w doktrynę wolności religijnej u siedemnastowiecznych socynian. Analiza obejmuje stosowane przez Braci Polskich argumenty za tolerancją, jej postulowany zakres i granice. Pierwszy rozdział ma charakter krótkiego wprowadzenia w historyczną sytuację wspólnoty religijnej Braci Polskich w analizowanym zakresie. Drugi rozdział jest poświęcony źródłom idei tolerancji oraz jej kształtowaniem się wśród arian polskich w wieku XVI. Trzeci rozdział poświęcony jest socyniańskiej doktrynie tolerancji zaprezentowanej w pismach Jana Crella, Samuela Przypkowskiego oraz Jonasza Szlichtynga. Ostatni rozdział porównuje doktrynę tolerancji socynian oraz analogiczne doktryny Johna Locke'a, Pierre'a Bayle'a oraz Woltera oraz stara się odpowiedzieć na pytanie czy można stwierdzić jakiś bezpośredni, bądź pośredni wpływ myśli socyniańskiej w tym zakresie na owych trzech myślicieli

General subject of this work is to show how idea of religious tolerance established in thought of Polish arians in sixteenth century and Socinians in the next century. Author analyses which were sources of this idea, which arguments did they use, what the extent of their ideas were, and finally what was their impact in european tolerant thought in the eightteenth century. In the first introductory chapter author presents the situation of Polish arians against the background of religious relations in Rzeczpospolita of sixteenth to seventeenth centuries. In the next chapter author seeks for the roots of the religious freedom ideas of forming in the Polish Brethren movement. In the third chapter author analyses concept of religious tolerance present in the Socinian writers: Jan Crell, Samuel Przypkowski and Jonasz Szlichtyng. In the last chapter are confronted the views on tolerance created by these three major Socinian thinkers and those created by thinkers of Enlightenment era: John Locke, Pierre Bayle and Voltaire and author tries to answer whether the Socinian ideas had any direct or indirect influence on them.
