Children’s suffering and death in press photography

Tematem mojej pracy jest śmierć i cierpienie dzieci w fotografiach prasowych. Takie zdjęcia zawsze poruszają, budzą reakcje - pozytywne lub negatywne, spotykają się z ogromnym odzewem całego świata. Dlatego właśnie wybrałam określony zakres materiału fotograficznego, który chcę dogłębnie zbadać. W swojej pracy analizuję fotografie w 6 różnych kategoriach: wojny, biedy i głodu, katastrof żywiołowych, wypadków i zaniedbań, choroby oraz terroryzmu. W każdej z kategorii przygotowałam do analizy po 2 zdjęcia. Wszystkie fotografie dobrałam ze względu na historię i kontekst fotografii. Moja hipoteza, której w swojej pracy będę dowodzić, to odpowiedzenie sobie na pytania czy publikacja i rozpowszechnianie na świecie zdjęć cierpiących dzieci wywołuje jakieś reakcje? Zmusza do czegoś? Zmienia coś w świecie? Ma wpływ na bieg historii? Czy może w końcu fotografia uratowała dziecko -bohatera zdjęcia od czegoś lub w jakikolwiek sposób mu pomogła. Interesuje mnie też reakcja i sposób podejścia reportera do całego zdarzenia, a w szczególności do małych bohaterów każdej fotografii, o której piszę.Dogłębna analiza wybranych zdjęć pokazała, że materiał fotograficzny bardzo często wpływa na losy bohaterów w nim prezentowanych, niejednokrotnie powoduje podjęcie określonych działań mających na celu niesienie pomocy. Wszystkie zdjęcia cierpiących dzieci wywołują żywą reakcję, współczucie, dyskusję chęć niesienia pomocy, czasem też budzą wiele kontrowersji natury etycznej.

The topic of my thesis is children’s suffering and pain in photojournalism. Such photography always strikes, it evokes emotions – either positive or negative. Pictures like that influence world and cause its strong reactions to the issues they touch on. Therefore I have chosen a particular set of pictures and I would like to analyze them thoroughly.The aforementioned images focus on 6 different categories: war, famine and poverty, terrorism, disasters, accidents and defaults and disease. Two pictures refer to each category. All photos have been chosen in accordance with their social and historical context. The hypothesis which I am to prove is: Do publication and global propagating of such pictures evoke any reactions? Does it force to anything? Does it change anything in the world? Does it have any impact on history? Did photography save anybody’s life or helped him or her somehow? Moreover, I am to discover the photojournalists’ attitude towards the whole situation while taking pictures, especially to the small characters of each picture. In my thesis I try to find the answers to these dilemmas.The minute analysis of the given material showed that photographs may change the situation of presented characters. It frequently generates certain actions which main aim is to bring help. All pictures that present children’s suffering and pain provoke public response, compassion, wide-ranging discussion and the eagerness to help. However, they sometimes create ethical controversies.
