Need for closure and its impact on stereotype application in a situation of low and unjustified sense of power.

Celem badania było sprawdzenie, czy związek między potrzebą domknięcia poznawczego a aplikacją stereotypu ulega osłabieniu w kontekście delegitymizowanego braku władzy. Poprzednie badania (Kruglanski i Freund,1983) dostarczyły dowodów na związek wysokiej potrzeby domknięcia z częstszą aplikacją stereotypu. Posiadanie władzy także okazało się mieć wpływ na posługiwanie się stereotypami. O ile osoby posiadające władzę są bardziej skłonne do posługiwania się stereotypami w wydawaniu sądów (Guinote, 2006; Rodriguez-Bailon, Moya i Yzerbyt, 2000), postrzegana legitymizacja braku władzy zmienia tę tendencję (Willis, Giunote i Rodriguez-Bailon, 2010). W tej pracy usiłowano sprawdzić, czy w warunku delegitymizowanego braku władzy obniża się postrzegana skuteczność realizacji potrzeby domknięcia, co prowadzi do mniej częstej aplikacji stereotypu niż w przypadku legitymizowanego braku władzy. W dwóch badaniach hipotezy nie udało się potwierdzić.

AbstractThe aim of this study was to examine whether the relationship between the need for cognitive closure and application of the stereotype is weakened in the context of illegitimate lack of power. Previous studies (Kruglanski and Freund, 1983) have provided evidence of an association of high need for closure of the more frequent application of the stereotype. Having the power also proved to have an impact on the use of stereotypes. While those with power are more likely to use stereotypes of judgment (Guinote, 2006; Rodriguez-Bailon; Moya and Yzerbyt, 2000), the perceived legitimacy of power changes this tendency (Willis, Giunote and Rodriguez-Bailon, 2010). In this study I attempted to check if in the condition of illegitimate lack of power reduced perceived need for the efficacy at fulfilling the need for closure leads to less frequent application of the stereotype than the legitimate lack of power. The results indicate no significant differences between experimental conditions and control condition.Key words: need for closure, the application of stereotypes, power, legitimacy, effectiveness.
